What to Know Before I Buy a Brother Sewing Machine?

As you probably have noticed so far, this brand offers a wide range of sewing machines. And they all have a well-earned reputation thanks to their great design and high-quality performance. However, before you buy a Brother machine, ask yourself a few questions.

For example, ask yourself what exactly do you need in a sewing machine? Will you need it in the future? Is it worth the investment if you are not a professional? Once answer these questions, and you are sure that you want a sewing machine, follow the next step.

Take a second look at our comparison chart and reviews and pay attention to the design variety and stitches. Do you prefer to keep it simple? Or you want something a bit more flexible, like a programmable machine, so you can insert your customized designs into?

Check the speed control, buttonholes and foot pedal? Is the foot pedal with adjustable sensitivity? Would you prefer adjustable speed control? Or you want the regular speed control? Most of the sewing machines on the market offer connectivity to the internet.

Is that an important feature for you? Another thing you should take into consideration is the number of accessories. If you buy from this brand, the quality of the accessories is not what you should pay attention to, but which ones to obtain. Are they easy to use?

And last but not less important question that you should ask yourself is if you can deal with a large, complicated sewing machine? How large and heavy is the perfect machine?

Have you already planned where to position your new best friend? Once you answer all these questions, look for the machine that matches your requirements and purchase it.

How Much Should I Spend On Brother Sewing Machine?

No matter if you are on the search for something affordable and quality at the same time. Or you have a larger budget and plan on spending a few extra bucks, Brother has your back. Some models cost only $100 or less. However, they have limited features.

If you are a beginner, you will not be needing all the special features. So, I would say that buying some of these models is a smart decision. No matter which one you pick, it will help you learn the basics of sewing without putting too much effort or time into it.

However, if you want to taste the best dish on the table, buy an advanced machine. It costs around $500 and a professional would love it, no matter the model. But if you are looking for an upgrade, you should not spend more than $250 on the Brother sewing machines.

  1. I am not a beginner however, it’s been years. I am learning to quilt. A dealer told me that a Baby Lock Soprano and a Brother BQ(?)950 are basically the same machine is that true

    1. Dear Kathy,

      Thank you for your comment.

They’re completely different. First of all, they’re produced by different companies. Second of all, Brother is basic sewing and embroidery machine while Babylock has more advanced features.

The Brother model provides a large workspace for quilts (4.1 inches x 8.3 inches), 15 accessory feet, and a wide selection of sewing stitches and 1-step buttonholes. Babylock Soprano, on the other hand, comes with a top-loading bobbin, automatic features, a built-in stitch memory, and more stitches.

They’re similar. However, they’re not the same. If you’re searching for a more advanced sewing machine with a lot of features, opt for Babylock Soprano. The Brother is perfect for mid-size quilts.

Have a wonderful day and stay safe.

      Love, Mary.

    1. Dear Mary,

      Thank you for your comment.

They’re both excellent and affordable quilting machines.

BM3730 comes with 37 built-in stitches. However, SQ9130 Includes 130 unique stitches. BM3730 is ideal for beginners while SQ9130 is a great choice for intermediate users.

In my opinion, SQ9130 is better for quilting because it’s loaded with more advanced features. It’s loaded with features of high-end machines without the expensive price tag!

Have a wonderful day and stay safe.

      Love, Mary.

  2. Dear Mary
Please could you tell me the difference between the Brother FS180QC and the Brother FS250 FE ?
    Thank you in anticipation.
    Ann

    1. Dear Ann,

Thank you for trusting my opinion.

With FS180QC sewing and quilting machine, you can expand your creative quilting and sewing possibilities. It’s a feature-rich combination machine with 180 stitches.

You will receive both quilting and sewing stitches along with 8 one-step buttonhole styles and 2 lettering fonts. There’s also a detachable wide table for larger projects.

The best part? You will get 11 accessory feet and a free motion grip with a foot for free-motion quilting. It’s user-friendly and versatile. And comes with a needle threader.

I forgot to mention the backlit LCD screen with digital stitch width and length controls. Finally, it’s covered by a 25-year limited warranty.

FS250FE is also impressive. It’s as versatile as the previous model. You can use this machine for home decor sewing projects and dressmaking.

It’s a computerized sewing machine with more built-in stitches than the previous machine. You will get 250 built-in decorative and utility stitches.

You will also receive 3 styles of lettering for monogramming and a broad table to complete big projects and feed system for even and smooth stitching.

14 feet are included in the purchase. This unit also has a back-lit LCD with easy stitch selector, and bright LED lighting which you will appreciate.

As you can see, they’re identical but FS250FE has more features than FS180QC and it includes 3 extra feet. They’re equally powerful and effective. The only difference is in the number of built-in stitches and feet. They have almost the same price.

In my opinion, if you want more versatility and options, opt for FS250FE. However, if you don’t focus on stitches and free accessories,  buy FS180QC.

Hopefully, my short comparison can help you choose wisely.

Have a wonderful day and stay safe.

      Love, Mary.

  3. Hi, I enjoyed reading all your articles and reviews. It can get overwhelming to say the least. So, I am trying to purchase a new sewing machine for my wife. She is currently on an older model brother that is 10 – 15 years old. She is an intermediate experienced sewer. Her needs are as follows,
    1. Machine must be able to handle heavy materials, quilts.
    2. Touch screen with Internal storage and external USB port.
    3. All the new features, automatic features as well as foot and knee abilities.
    4. ** she needs a machine that can handle larger needles for sewing patches on motorcycle leather vests **** so the machine needs to have a strong frame, larger motor and variable speeds…..
    5. Machine to perform sewing and embroidery

I would very much appreciate your recommendations on a few Brother Sewing machines that would fit her wish list. Thanks, Gary Winter

    1. Dear Gary,

Thank you for your comment and lovely words!

I’m happy that you find my reviews informative and fun to read.

If your wife trusts Brother, I would recommend  Brother Project Runway CS5055PRW Electric Sewing Machine. It’s one of the few Brother machines in stock and ready to ship.

It’s loaded with all the features you mentioned. And performs both sewing and embroidery. This unit is within your price range and handles heavy-duty materials.

I would also recommend  Juki  TL-2000Qi sewing and quilting machine. It’s fast, powerful and includes all the features you required.  It’s within your budget as well.

Please, check my heavy-duty machine reviews for extra information. Most of the sewing machines aren’t in stock anymore due to the current situation.

If you’re not in a hurry, I would kindly suggest that you wait because there might be a better machine for your wife. that’s not available at this moment.

Have a nice day and stay safe.

      Love, Mary.

      1. Mary,
Thanks for your reply and advice. We are not in a rush. Question, which machines would be a better fit for her when available or are you thinking there could be some newer models released? Thanks again, Gary

        1. Dear Gary,

I would recommend the Janome HD3000 Sewing Machine. It’s one of the greatest sewing machines for home use.  As I just noticed, it’s still in stock and ready to ship!

I would also suggest Janome HD3000 Heavy Duty Sewing Machine. It’s also a powerful sewing machine with a hard case, automatic features and capable of dealing with thick fabrics.

SINGER Heavy Duty 4432 is also a popular sewing machine for heavy-duty projects. It’s also still in stock and ready to ship! However, it’s not a computerized sewing machine.

SINGER  Quantum Stylist 9960 Computerized Portable Sewing Machine is also available for purchase. If you want a computerized machine that delivers professional results every time, this is the one! It has an automatic needle threader, 600 built-in stitches, hard case, and so on.

If your spouse wants to stick with Brother, I would kindly suggest the Brother SE600 Sewing Embroidery. Or the legendary Brother CS6000i Sewing Machine. They’re both amazing!

Hopefully, my answer can help you and your wife make a wise choice. Please, follow my site for updates and don’t hesitate to contact me in the future for further assistance.

Have a wonderful day and stay safe.

          Love, Mary.

  4. I wonder when more machines will make it to the market! They are the new TP for lack of supply. I want to purchase a cs6000i after my research and am unable to find one that doesn’t have the price increases to what I could pay for a better machine. There is one on EBay-last I looked about $600! My DIL would like to learn to sew and this seems like a good starter machine. My sister found a cs7205 at a Joans but I find little info on it. Unfortunately the kids live far from me or I would loan her one of my numerous machines to try!

    1. Dear Su,

      Thank you for your comment.

Hopefully, more machines will make it to the market after the crisis!

Don’t worry! Unfortunately, CS6000i is out of stock at Amazon and other shopping websites. However, other beginner-friendly units like Singer 1304 and Janome 2222 are still available.

Check them out and let me know if you’re interested in another model or brand in specific. Also, make sure to follow my website for updates.

Have a nice day and stay safe.

      Love, Mary.

    1. Dear Janice,

      Thank you for your comment.

If you want to add style to your garments and explore your creativity, this is the sewing unit for you. The Brother SB530T comes with a lot of useful features.

They include a built-in needle threading system, 54 inbuilt sewing stitches with 1-step auto-size buttonhole, a brightly lit LED working space, and a free arm.

It’s also loaded with a jam-resistant quick-set drop-in top bobbin, an easy stitch selector dial and adjustable stitch width and length.

What I like most about this machine is the included wide table for larger projects. It also has quick-change presser feet and 25-year limited warranty.

As you can notice, it’s a feature-rich, decent machine. It’s also affordable. You can find it for less than $200 on the market.

Hopefully, my short review can help you make the right choice.

Have a wonderful day and stay safe.

      Love, Mary.

    1. Dear Peggy,

      Thank you for your comment.

They’re very identical. If their graphics weren’t different, you wouldn’t be able to set these two machines apart. The only biggest difference is in the number of embroidery designs.

The SE600 has 80 built-in designs while SE625 has a few extra embroidery design options. However, they aren’t built-in but on a CD.

The price difference isn’t big. SE625 is slightly costlier than SE600 because of the additional embroidery designs that you get on a CD.

It depends on your personal preferences which model you choose. They’re both great machines. Please, watch this video for more information.

Hopefully, my answer can help you choose the right sewing machine for you.

Have a nice day and stay safe.

P.S. Let me know which one you choose.

      Love, Mary.
