Everyone passionate about embroidery knows that Janome represents one of the most popular, trusted brands on the market. They produce both sewing and embroidery machines.
People trust Janome because they produce high-quality machines. Their Janome 3160 is no exception. It is computerized with a powerful motor and smart settings.
Even if you’re a professional tailor, this model can satisfy your needs and requirements. It’s suitable for both home business and home use. I like it because it’s lightweight.
The Janome 3160 has enough built-in stitches to meet your daily sewing needs and help you accomplish every sewing project you have in mind.
Although it’s not an embroidery unit, thanks to the installed lettering patterns, you can also use it to sew names and letters. Also, it includes impressive accessories.
One of them is an extension table you can use for larger projects including quilts. However, what people like about this machine are the LCD screen and the intuitive control panel.
They allow you to view every detail of your project. Additionally, this unit is also loaded with other easy-to-use smart features including an automatic needle threader and more.
Below, I will review each feature in detail. Let’s jump into my Janome 3160 reviews and determine if this machine is right for you or not.

Overall Review
3160 machine is made with quilters in mind.
This unit comes with 60 built-in stitches along with six 1-step buttonholes. It feeds with the original SFS which provides consistent stitch quality.
If you’re looking for a computerized unit with premium features and design, look no further than 3160. It features a start/stop switch and a speed control slider.
The slider allows you to sew without using the foot controller. It also has an automatic needle threader and a built-in thread cutter which slices the thread with a push of a button.
Thanks to this feature, you will get a nice and clean finish on your projects. Another important feature that is worth mentioning is the memorized needle up/down.
This feature is important to quilters because it’s useful during pivoting. The auto lockstitch and reverse button are also included. The level is included for dropping feed dogs.
However, I like the backlit LCD screen because it allows me to see the settings. Arrow keys are included for adjustments and stitch selection.
If you buy this advanced machine, you will get a top drop-in bobbin which is easy to use. The automatic bobbin winder is also a great feature you will like.
Most users like the flexible presser foot pressure and free arm. 3160 is a true workhorse with a speed of 820 stitches per minute.
It’s a decent SPM – not the greatest by industry standards but solid. You will also get LED work lights and a horizontal retractable spool pin.
This unit weighs 12 pounds and comes with a built-in carry handle.
This adds to the portability and turns this unit into a travel-friendly sewing buddy. You can take it to your sewing classes or travels.
It also includes an extension table which is appreciated by quilters and serious sewers.
The table features retractable legs so you can take it to your sewing classes with great ease. Last but not least, I would like to mention the warranty for this unit.
The Janome 3160 is covered by a 25-year limited warranty. However, I will discuss the warranty in detail later in this article. The next thing I want to talk about is usability.
This machine is reliable and easy to use. However, it also has a few flaws you need to consider. It’s super lightweight but doesn’t move around on the table.
The stability of this unit is what impressed me the most.
It’s lightweight but sturdy at the same time. It’s the perfect machine for passionate quilters who want to take their projects to new heights.
However, if you’re interested in sewing many layers of dense fabrics, this machine might not be suitable for you. It doesn’t handle heavy-duty projects.
One time, I tried to sew multiple layers of denim (+6) and the thread got stuck. It performs flawlessly on other fabrics and materials.
Since I am a huge fan of good lighting, I wasn’t impressed by the lights on this machine. Verified buyers say that the light is dim and I can confirm this claim.
However, this isn’t the biggest problem with Janome 3160. Unfortunately, the thread gets tangled under the bobbin. Issues like this aren’t common with Janome units.
First Impressions
When I first laid eyes on this machine, I thought it might be a solid basic sewing unit.
However, after reviewing it more thoroughly, I discovered that it’s more than just a basic machine. First, I noticed the big stitch selection panel on the right side.
After, I noticed the bright LED lights (disappointed by them later), many function switches, a super large needle plate with seam guides and a threading guide.
That was when this model caught my attention. Working on Janome 3160 is pretty easy, especially for beginners. The setting up is also straightforward.
All you need to do is follow the guides and you will wind the bobbin and thread your machine with ease. The clear plastic cover makes it easy to see when you’re running low on thread.
Also, the super large needle plate features seam guides which I appreciate. The stitch selection is easy to master.
All you need to do is locate the correct stitch number and utilize the buttons on the upper panel to lock it in. I tested out the decorative stitches first.
And I can say that I was very impressed by the result. They turned out ideal. The straight stitches have a sturdy yet delicate quality.
The thread cutting and stitch locking buttons make a great addition that turns sewing into a super quick and efficient process unlike quilting and sewing on other similar units.
Additionally, the extension table included allows me to complete super large projects such as quilts with great ease. To install it, just remove the onboard storage and slide it into the spot.
This machine can handle different types of fabric including natural fabrics like wool, linen, and cotton. It can also work with fine fabrics like velvet, taffeta, satin, and silk.
Other fabrics include synthetics like polyester, rayon, and blends, upholstery, knits, leather, canvas, twill and plastic. It can also handle extra dense fabrics or multiple layers.
The Janome 3160 sews steadily and quietly. The quiet operation is one of the reasons why I like this unit. Although it’s lightweight, it performs better than some heavy-weight units.
You can find 3160 for less than $1000 which makes it extremely affordable. You will get a portable, high-quality, reliable unit without breaking your bank account. It brings great value for money.
I hesitated about buying this machine but I haven’t regretted my purchase and that’s why I recommend it to beginners, people with children who want to sew and experts.
I believe that children would enjoy a computerized machine like this one more than they would enjoy a mechanical sewing machine.
After all, we live in modern times. This means that kids already know how to use computerized gadgets. They know how to manipulate them more than adults.
A child at the age of 7 can use and master sewing with this sewing machine with a little help from adults. Although it’s perfect for children, it’s not boring for experienced users.
No matter if you’re a professional or intermediate user, you will enjoy this sewing unit. It’s made with all ages and skill levels in mind.
The Janome 3160 is lightweight but can handle many hours of work without a problem. I can tell you this from personal experience.
I use this unit for hours without a break and so far, I haven’t experienced any issues.
Features of Janome 3160
It’s important to take a closer look at the main features of a machine before buying it. Let’s review some of Janome 3160’s features and learn more about this machine.
- Built-In Stitches
This machine comes with 60 built-in stitches. The selection of stitches is more than enough to meet the sewing needs of every user.
They include six 1-step buttonholes, letters, frames, and so on. Although, this is a sewing-only machine, thanks to the embroidery stitches you can also write names or letters.
- Control Panel and LCD Screen
The large LCD screen and control panel make sure that you have complete control over your projects. If you want a unit that allows you to select and edit stitches, this model is for you.
Thanks to the control panel, you will also be able to see them in detail. This is very helpful for decorative stitches because it allows you to notice more details and do the finest adjustments.
- Automatic Needle Threader
Since 3160 is a computerized model, it’s expected to have a lot of smart features such as the automatic needle threader. You don’t need to wind threads manually anymore.
Instead, you need to press a button and your sewing machine will do it for you. This saves you time and a lot of nerves. It also increases your productivity and works efficiency.
- Extension Table
The extension table is one of my favorite features because it allows me to complete larger projects such as quilts. The table delivers extra working and sewing space.
- Tension Dial
The tension dial of this machine is very precise, allowing users to adjust their tension. It can also lock the tension you adjust. However, this isn’t necessary when working with different fabrics.
- Speed
The maximum speed of this unit is 820 stitches per minute. It’s not the best speed by industry standards but it is still solid. The speed isn’t fixed but adjustable instead.
You can always set your speed according to your project and needs. This feature is important when you encounter some stitching challenges.
- Accessories
Some of 3160’s accessories include seven presser feet (satin stitch foot, an automatic buttonhole foot, 1/4-inch seam foot, zigzag foot, zipper foot, overedge foot, and blind hem foot).
It also includes extra bobbins, a needle set, a spool pin felt, an extra spool pin, a seam ripper, a lint brush and a spool stand, an extension table, a screwdriver key, a hardcover, and instructions.
Good Sides of Janome 3160
First and foremost, Janome 3160 is easy to set up thanks to the automatic needle threader and the LCD screen. It handles the routine details you would rather ignore.
It also maintains your status clear on the LCD screen. You don’t need to be an expert in sewing to utilize this unit. Janome 3160 is made with all ages and skill levels in mind.
Unboxing this machine is also simple. All you need to do is get the automatic needle threader ready for your next project, select your stitch and you’re ready to sew.
The second good thing about this machine is that it is easy to use. Just push the foot pedal or press your “on” and “off” switch and you can start sewing.
If you want to cut a thread after a pattern, all you need to do is press a button and the built-in cutter will do it for you.
If you need to make a reverse stitch, there is a switch for that too. Adjusting the speed of 3160 is simple. Just press the foot pedal or utilize the speed slider in the front.
No matter if you’re a professional sewer or beginner, you will enjoy using this machine. Another positive thing about it is that it’s super versatile. It comes with many different stitches.
It also includes a bunch of feet you can apply and a wide selection of features. You will notice that there are no limitations with this machine. Once you buy it, the sky will be your only limit.
No matter if you want to make a whole new outfit or complete basic projects, this machine has got your back. It has all you need to get started immediately.
Sewers like the extension table because it allows them to complete larger projects such as quilts. I love it too. As you can notice, this model is loaded with advanced features.
However, even though it performs like a heavy-weight machine, it’s lightweight and portable. It includes a built-in carrying handle which makes it perfect for sewing classes or travels.
It’s the ideal travel companion. You will be able to take your new sewing buddy to your sewing classes or take it with you on your travels.
It’s suitable for both home business and home use. The compact design combined with its weight makes it possible to accommodate this unit anywhere you want.
It will fit on most tabletops. However, if you don’t have enough space at the moment, you can tuck it in a closet or cupboard until you make space.
Janome 3160 is the perfect machine to grow with. Once you improve your skills and outgrow this model, you can make an upgrade although it’s not necessary.
Experts love this machine because of the strong construction and advanced features. It’s super durable but lightweight at the same time which is quite impressive.
Bad Sides of Janome 3160
I am a big fan of good lighting so I was very disappointed with the dim lighting of this machine.
And it seems as verified buyers agree with me on this. If you go through online reviews about this unit, you will notice many complaints about the lighting.
It doesn’t deliver enough brightness which makes it hard to see your project. However, if you want, you can easily solve this issue by applying another lighting source.
If this isn’t a dealbreaker for you, don’t hesitate to buy this machine today. I’m 100% confident that you won’t regret your purchase tomorrow or anytime in the future.
Another thing I have to mention is the problem when working with multiple layers of thicker fabrics such as denim. I once tried to sew over 6 layers of denim and it stuck.
It’s not a heavy-duty machine so if you’re looking for a machine that can handle thick fabrics regularly, look elsewhere.
Final Thoughts
If you take out the cons I mentioned in the negative sides section, it’s a champion unit. I understand that you may get skeptical when you hear about the bad lighting.
However, it’s not something you cannot solve with additional lights. Other than that, it’s a perfect model for sewing and quilting. It’s made with passionate quilters in mind.
Beginners and advanced users will enjoy using this machine. It’s feature-rich, affordable, travel-friendly, and reliable. It’s not a heavy-duty machine but a lightweight, efficient one.
Hopefully, my Janome 3160 reviews can help you determine if this sewing machine is right for you. Have you ever used this machine? If so, what is your honest opinion on it?
Feel free to drop a comment below and let me know!
Your review is misleading and inaccurate. The 3160 does not do lettering or numbers and does not have “frames”.
You should edit this and remove that comment because it is not true. Your review does not provide practical information.
Can I see letters with this machine? I though I read it has this capability but can’t find any instructions to do it. I want to be able to see my grandchildren’s initials on projects. Thanks.
Dear Janet,
Unfortunately, this model by Janome doesn’t have the alphabet. It does come with 59 stitches including eyelet, buttonholes, and several decorative stitches.
SINGER Quantum Stylist 9960 Computerized Portable Sewing Machine is one of the best sewing units for lettering. Also, consider Janome 4120QDC Computerized Sewing Machine.
They’re both excellent for initials. The model by Janome has one monogramming font (English but an option for European accented and Russian letters). 9960 has five.
Have a lovely day and stay safe.
Love, Mary.
Have the initial bobbin issues been taken care of? Earlier reviews when machine was new to market indicated issues with the bobbin.
Dear Karyn,
Thank you for your comment.
Unfortunately, I haven’t found any updates on this issue. All I could find online was the many complaints of previous users who talk about this issue.
Please, contact the seller and inform yourself on this issue before you make a purchase. Ask if the model is improved or not. Hopefully, you will get answers.
Have a great day and stay safe.
Love, Mary.
