Sewing is a quite a fun activity for adults but children too. It is easy to learn and can boost your child’s creativity and self-esteem. If you want to teach your child valuable skill, sewing is the thing. It will help your child express better and become self-reliant.
But before you do that, you have to choose the right sewing machine in order to keep your child’s attention. And if you don’t know how to recognize the best sewing machine for kids, we have you covered in this article. They’re all easy to use, however, some can suit your child more than others. How to choose the best one? Let’s find out together.
Why Should I Teach My Kids To Sew? What Are The Benefits?
You would be surprised to hear that kids can learn how to sew at an early age. Your kid is capable of learning this skill at a very young age. So, if your precious little-loved one is only 3-years old or younger, don’t hesitate to buy the first sewing machine and start with teaching.
If you wonder what are the benefits of sewing in children, know that it’s an activity that will boost your child’s self-esteem and improve their self-confidence.
Most schools and educational programs have cut the artistic learning programs/studies and wonder why the children get easily bored. It is because kids need to be distracted by something that boosts their creativity, something that requires imagination. It is why we suggest sewing. It will not take much of their time but give them so much more.
Also, sewing is an activity that can help your child make new friends. However, keep in mind that not every child knows how to sew. So, it is best to look for children who are already into sewing and invite them over to teach your kid new sewing tricks and ideas.
As for the sewing machine, make sure that you’re buying the right one. If you know how to sew and have your own machine, do not let your child use it. Adult machines don’t fit your child’s fingers. Look for a lightweight and compact machine with small footprints.
What Types of Sewing Machines For Kids Exist?
Most sewing machines on the market are the standard type. But if you want to increase your investment, think about the number of stitches you want the new machine to have.
If your kid is just getting started, you only need a dozen stitches, so it is logical to save money on this specific feature. However, if your child is not a beginner, and you’re looking for a machine that will help them develop new ideas and challenges, we suggest you enhance to an embroidery-only sewing machine. It will help your kid to get creative with new designs and patterns by using their vivid imagination and innocent artistic soul.
When buying a sewing machine for kids, look for one that’s easily connected to the web, so you can update it with available patterns and designs to keep things fun and creative.
If your child is ready for an advanced level, an entry-level serger sewing machine is the right choice. It is safe and uses multiple threads. If your child already knows to control thread tension and does not face any issues, this is just the perfect machine for them.

What Features To Look For In A Good Sewing Machine For Kids?
It is very important to choose the right sewing machine before you start teaching your child how to sew. If it is your first time buying a sewing machine, it might be a beat of a challenge to pick the best one. But we are here to help. Just look for these features.
- Real features
First and foremost, you have to give your child a real sewing machine and not a toy in order to practice and develop their sewing skills. One of the first real features to look for in a sewing machine for kids is the feet of the machine. See if they snap off when changing or attach nicely. In a machine for kids, make sure that the feet are attached.
- Safety features
Fun sewing ideas can turn into a disaster if your sewing machine isn’t safe and your kid hurts itself when sewing. So, it is very important to buy a safe machine. And by “safe” I mean buying a model with safety features attached on the pedal to prevent your child’s from getting hurt.
Look for a modern one that offers options that provide push-button, stopping and starting whenever you want without the pedal. We have a few suggestions on these type of modern sewing machines in the comparison chart for 2021 down below.
- Creative pattern
The best sewing machine for kids makes sewing fun. How? Well, if the sewing machine is their favorite color or has their favorite cartoon/movie character printed on it, your child will sew with excitement. That is why it is important to pay close attention to the pattern and color as well. This can boost their creativity and develop their skills faster.
How Much Should I Spend On A Sewing Machine For Kids?
If you already know what type of sewing machine you want to get for your kid, it is time to learn the prices. An entry-level sewing machine costs around $100 or less on Amazon and other online stores. However, if you want a high-quality sewing machine to help your kid develop their sewing skills a lot faster and better, be prepared to spend over $250.
However, if you want an upgrade with an embroidery machine, you will pay over $350. It is important that your child is happy with the choice. The rest is not that significant.
Tips That Will Help Your Kids Learn How To Sew Like A Pro
In order to help you teach your child to sew like a pro, we have prepared a few tips on how to do it. It might be fun and creative, but sewing still requires your full attention.
Something you will not read anywhere but here is that you have to teach your child how to sew on hand first. So, before you purchase the first sewing machine that grabs your attention, consider buying a sewing kit (the last one in our list of best sewing products).
Excite your kid about sewing. Yet, if you do not know how to sew, do not worry because someone in your family or friends must know how to sew and will agree to teach you. If not, YouTube DIY videos are always free to watch and learn alone. Or with your child.
Tip 1: Gather The Necessary Supplies
If your child is a beginner, you should try to sew with a hand before you try with the machine. This might boost your child’s imagination and creativity. He or she will see how much fun sewing really is. It will not cost you much to gather these sewing supplies:
- Sewing thread in different colors
- Sharp needles in different sizes
- Sharp scissors or shears and pins
- Woven in many different colors
- A place to store the straight pins
- A seam ripper for ripping stitches
Tip 2: Homemade Sewing Kit
You can use an old picnic basket, suitcase or lidded box to create the perfect sewing kit. The cheapest way to create your sewing kit is to use something you already have on hand. Or you can get an empty box at the thrift store. Organize your necessities in jars and bags. Keep them near your child, so they can be prepared when inspiration strikes.
Tip 3: If You Do Not Know How To Sew, Find A Mentor For Your Child
If you know how to sew and you want to pass your experience to your child, that is nice. But if you do not know how to sew and you want to learn together with your child, hire a mentor. Do you have a relative or friend who is into sewing? Invite them over and learn the basics. Or do your own research on the internet and find how-to-guides for sewing.
Tip 4: Get Sewing Books For Beginners From A Local Library Or Store
Instead of searching for YouTube videos on how to sew, do it the old-fashioned. Visit your local library or bookstore and pick up sewing books for beginners. They will inspire you and your kid to sew better. Also, you might pick up some cool ideas from the books.
Tip 5: Start Sewing To Inspire And Excite Your Little One To Start Too
If you want to inspire and excite your child about sewing, there is not a better way to do it, than picking up the needle and thread and start sewing. After, you can both pass on the sewing machine and start developing your skills. The start is what matters most.
Tip 6: Teach Your Child How To Accept Their Own Imperfections
If you are a beginner and you think that you are doing a lousy job, stop it because your child will follow your steps. Be kind to yourself and your child, if you are both beginners and accept your imperfections. This will teach your child to accept their imperfections.
Tip 7: Make Sure That Your Child Feels Like You Are In This Together
Instead of giving your child an unimportant small task, work on a bigger sewing project together. It does not matter if you sew with hands or with the machine. Make him or she feel important. This will keep your child engaged and excited about new projects.
Tip 8: Allow Your Child To Express Their Creativity And Suggest Ideas
No matter how funny and stupid your child’s idea sounds, let his/her express creativity and suggest sewing ideas. Who knows, you might get surprised by their imagination and creations. Suggest your own ideas and do not be afraid to put challenges on their way.
Tip 9: Upgrade Their Sewing Skills
Do not focus on sewing only. Upgrade your skills and the skills of your kid. For example, learn how to put a zipper, make buttonholes or embroidery. Start with smaller projects and help your child upgrade their sewing skills. To learn how to do things, visit YouTube.
Tip 10: Adjust Everything To Their Size
Adjusting everything to your child’s size will make it easier for her to learn how to sew. Consider what type of chair to buy and make sure they can reach the foot pedal. If you buy a modern sewing machine, you won’t have to worry about this, but pay attention to the parts of the machine too. Make sure that the wheel and presser foot lever is good.
Tip 11: Warn Your Child About The Dangers
As you can probably assume, the biggest danger when sewing is sticking the needle in your finger. This is why you need to warn your kid about the possible dangers of sewing on hand and sewing with a machine. Demonstrate how the process goes. Explain how the needle and foot pedal work together. Make sure they understand that playing with the foot pedal might end up tragically. This is an important step to keep your child excited.
Tip 12: Practice Sewing On Paper
Search the internet and you will find different printables that allow kids to “sew” and practice before they actually start sewing on hand or with a sewing machine. It is a nice way to get your child interested and excited about sewing. A practical smart technique.
Tip 13: The Final Craft Is Not What Matters The Most But The Process
You are teaching your child how to sew not to create a masterpiece but to spend time together and develop new skills. The first crafts will not be as impressive as you think. However, the lessons that your child will learn during the entire process are priceless.
Tip 14: Do Not Make Things Stressful And Frustrating For Your Child
Sewing is supposed to bring fun into your child’s life. Also, it is supposed to boost the self-esteem of your little one and not cause stress. In fact, sewing is what some people do to find their inner peace. As you can notice, it is a peaceful and creative activity and not something that your child should be frustrated about. Do not push your child to sew if it is not their wish and passion. If it is, do not push your child to sew to perfection.
Some things do not need to be perfect to be beautiful. And the first sewing crafts of your child are one of them. You will not keep them forever but replace them with a lot better crafts that your kid is going to make in the future. Give it some time and space.
Tip 15: Start With Small Projects And Sew Together With Your Child
Children do not have the same mindset as adults. If they find some things too difficult, it may affect their self-confidence in a bad way. Or lose passion for what they were excited for and lose interest in everything, thinking that other hobbies are hard too.
This is why it is important to sew together with your kid until it understands that sewing is an activity that calms their soul, helps them express their creative side and become an independent person. Sewing will teach your child an important life lesson.
And that is, that hard work always pays off. Learning how to sew since a young age will teach your kid that practicing something that they love can help them become the best at it. Also, it will keep them away from technology, video games, and bad experiences.

Thanks Debbie
Dear Debbe,
Thank you for your kind words.
Aside from a buyer claiming that this model is difficult at times to get through fabric, I wasn’t able to find any other downfall.
Here are the specifications:

I personally think that buying from a retailer is a smart idea because as you said yourself if you ever have issues, you can bring the machine in for help.
I am so happy that you have finally decided which sewing machine to buy. Let me know if you need help or have some other questions.
I wish you a nice day.
Love, Mary.
I don’t want a computerized full size machine
I would prefer a 3/4 size machine
Do u have any experience with the derby Janome line that u sell?
Debbie
Dear Debbie,
Thank you for your reply.
Yes, I am very familiar with the derby Janome line.
I personally recommend the Graceful Gray model. It is elegant, compact and lightweight. It is the ideal sewing machine for basic projects and learning.
It comes with 11 stitches, storage space, 2 needle positions, free arm, and easy reverse. It also has a top drop-in bobbin with a transparent cover, presser foot with a finger guard that protects little fingers, and threading diagrams.
However, keep in mind that it is not suitable for heavy-duty projects and has no built-in light.
I’ll check that model out . How do u compare that to the Janome 3128 and baby lock joy model?
Thanks for your input !
Debbie
Dear Debbie,
I will soon publish a dedicated article on Babylock sewing machines. Luckily for you, I have covered the Joy model as well.
It is the best budget-friendly model by this brand and makes a perfect choice for beginners and children.
If you’re looking for a machine for basic sewing projects, this is it. It comes with 19 built-in stitches and a four-step buttonhole.
The electronic foot control, drop-in bobbin, and drop feed for free-motion techniques are just some of the features that this model has to offer. It also has built-in accessory storage and a convenient thread cutter.
The only downfall of this machine is the limited number of built-in stitches.
The Janome 3128 is portable with a carrying handle. It has an LED light and performs quietly. However, it is not the greatest machine on the market for beginners.
But it is highly suitable for children.
According to customer reviews, children easily adapt to sewing with this unit. Also, you will get a 25-year limited warranty.
However, it lacks advanced features such as automatic needle threader and thread cutter.
In my opinion, Graceful Gray and Joy by Babylock perform better than this machine. However, the final choice is yours.
Hopefully, my comparisons can help you choose the right machine for your daughter. If you have more questions, don’t hesitate to ask. I will be more than happy to answer them for you.
Love, Mary.
Thank you so much for your comparisons on machines
I am eliminating the Janome because of the front load bobbin
So I’m now between the baby lock joy and the graceful grey….
have u sewed on both these models ?
Both have lights and drop in top bobbins
Can I snap on one of those safety feet on the baby lock for protection ?
Thanks
Debbie
Dear Debbie,
I have experience with the Graceful Grey and it works like magic. However, I haven’t personally tried the Babylock Joy but a friend of mine did.
She said that it’s one of the best sewing machines that she ever used. It’s convenient, compact, and easy to use. And yes, you can snap on safety feet on it.
Both machines are amazing, so don’t worry about choosing the one you prefer over the other. I wish you the best of luck.
Love, Mary.
I read your article for machines I am so confused at this point because I can’t find a machine that has speed control and easy bobbin access and loading and screw foot rather than snap on
Need a light and would be super if there was an automatic threader
Is there such a thing that is 3/4 size for my granddaughter
Safety issues are a concern as was pointed out
What’s your best choice
Reading reviews all over the place and my head is spinning
Thanks Debbie
Dear Debbie,
Thank you for your e-mail and for asking for my opinion on this matter.
The machine you described sounds like the Brother CS6000i sewing machine. It has adjustable sewing speed, easy bobbin access, automatic needle threader, and has been the best-selling machine from this brand. It’s a legendary machine that is lightweight, elegant, and perfect for absolute beginners and kids.
MICHLEY LSS-202 Lil’ Sew & Sew Mini 2-Speed Sewing Machine is also a great choice for beginners. It has stitch control and double thread. Your daughter can make just anything, from denim to silk. There is also a foot pedal as you required and safety features. They’re both great, user-friendly machines for children.
Hopefully, my suggestions will help you choose the right sewing machine for your child. However, please read my reviews on the best sewing machines for kids one more time before you make a final decision.
Love, Mary.
