🔥 30 Best Sewing Machines For Beginners: Basic & Easiest Sewing Machine

"I hope you love the products I recommend! When you buy through links on maryjanesandgaloshes.com, I may earn an affiliate commission."

Once our uniform were on, corduroy hanging inches below our ankles, I’d slink up next to her old best sewing machine, Singer desk. That is where she kept a tiny foot stool to take our measurements. “Who’s first?” she’d ask through the color-topped push pin; she’d have tucking between her teeth.

How would I forget Augusts? My brother and I would make the five-block trek to our grandmother’s old Brownstone in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. That was before school. With our bags of uniform in hand, she’d tell us, “go get into your new pants,” so she could get us “fitted” ready for school.

One by one my brother and I would take our turns while the other watched The Price is Right on her old black and white. She’d begin to mark her stitch points with pushpins, and then she would work her magic at the sewing wheel.

Pedaling away, she was no longer our old immigrant grandma but a cyclist in training for the Tour de France, a witch hovering over a bubbling concoction, a double kick drummer, a soldier dismantling a bomb. It was her craft, it was her trade, and she did it with precision.

“You two are growing overnight,” she’d tell us with a sigh, almost as if the professional in her were ashamed to be leaving an inch of material to be “let down” as the months went by.

That was the mid-1980, a time when I thought neither hemming nor sewing would ever be more than something old ladies did. Still, to my delight, sewing is now more popular than ever. It seems as if everyone is into needlecraft these days!

So, what’s the draw?

For starters, it is eco-friendly and financially responsible. It offers a bridge of memories to my grandma, who was the first to inspire my love of sewing.

I am a professional tailor with over 15 years sewing on a variety of sewing machines. From my own experience, I know that choosing the right machine to match your lifestyle can be a challenge. I am here to help.

Well, sewing machine reviews are vitally helpful in exposing you to different opinions. By all means investigate the manufacturer’s website but also look for impartial advice.

What is The Best Sewing Machine for Beginners?

With so many options out there, it can be challenging to choose which sewing machine is best for a beginner. This fact is real if you’re working with a sewing machine the first time.

Essential Criteria

  • Convenience
  • Build quality
  • Flexibility
  • Overall performance

These four basic concepts should underpin your research and decision-making process.

There are more specific questions you might want to ponder…

Key Features

  • Changing needles. How easy is this? How long does it take?
  • How does the machine cope with multiple layers?
  • Stitching ability on heavy materials. Watch out for problems with drop feed and bunching
  • Tension control. Without this feature, some tasks can become tricky
  • Creating a buttonhole. How simple is it and what system is used? 1 step is easier and more accurate; 4 step can be time-consuming and prone to errors. Pay special attention to the accuracy of a finished buttonhole
  • Does a bound seam remain true? Quality counts
  • Ease of threading and how long it takes. If you have poor coordination, then look out for automatic threading feature
  • Changing a presser foot. Is this a Snap-On adjustment or does it need screws?
  • Feed dog control. This is paramount with bulkier fabrics
  • Versatility with different projects (quilting, straight sewing, free arm…)
  • Built-in stitches. Go for a good range of basics rather than overkill with decorative alternatives
  • Adaptability for different skill levels
  • Speed. Is it being a priority for you? Remember, though: if the machine cannot comfortably operate at high speed then certain projects may turn out ineffective.
  • Cost vs features: is it worth the investment?

With the ongoing situation, it’s important to stay protected. And one of the best way to protect yourself and the people you love is by using a face mask and washing hands.

However, why purchase a face mask, when you can make it yourself? It’s easy and doesn’t require much time, effort or money. Let’s take a look at the necessary materials.

Materials

  • 2 Pieces of Cotton Fabric (7 inches x 9 inches)

You can use dish towels, t-shirts, and pillowcases as an alternative. However, make sure all the material is well-washed and completely dry.

  • 2 Pieces of Cotton Fabric (1.5 inches x 40 inches)

You will need these pieces for the mask’s strap. You can also use something like ribbon or shoelaces. You will also need a good pair of scissors.

  • Sewing Machine

The Singer 1304 is perfect for this project. And it’s still in stock and ready to ship, unlike other machines at the moment. The Janome Graceful Gray is also easy to use.

Instructions

Making a face mask is straightforward. Please, follow these 6 simple steps on how to make a face mask in record time for you and your loved ones.

Step 1:

Sew the 2 main rectangle pieces together with the front sides of the material (the side you want to see), facing each other. Sew around the rectangles and leave a small gap (a couple of inches) on the long side.

Step 2:

Switch the rectangle right-side-out by reaching into the gap you left open. Pull the fabric through. Now, your edges are on the inside. You have a beautifully sewn two-sided rectangle. At the gap you left open, simply tuck the edges inside temporarily. You will sew it closed later.

Step 3:

Create 3 evenly spaced pleats along both 7-inch sides of the material. Make sure to keep all your tucks facing the same way. Pin in the spot. You can mark the spacing with pins.

Put one about 1.5 inches down the short side of the material. Apply the next pin 1 inch down from that. Then, apply the third 1/2 inch down from that.

Continue alternating between 1 and 1/2 inches until you have utilized all 6 pins. To make the pleats, just take the first pin down to meet the second.

And the 3rd to meet the 4th. And the 5th to meet the 6th. After, repeat the same process on the other side. You’re halfway done with everything! Keep going!

Step 4:

Stitch around the perimeter of your rectangle once the pleats are pinned. This will patch the pleats into spot. Also, it will shut down the gap you had left open.

Step 5:

If you’re utilizing a strip of fabric for the strap, just fold and iron it in half lengthwise.

After, fold and iron the raw borders in. Located the centres of your straps along with the centres of the long sides of your face mask. Match them.

Pin the straps in a spot together with the long borders of your mask. Thus way, you will have one strap on the bottom of your mask, and one on the top.

Step 6:

Patch the strap to your face mask by sewing all the wat down each strap. Catch the borders of the mask as you go. Voila! Your homemade face mask is done!

Brother CS6000i Sewing and Quilting Machine

(Best Overall)

Brother CS6000i Computerized Sewing Machine With 60 Built-In Stitches

This past June summer I was lead costume designer for our community production of Greece. I borrowed my friend Holly’s Brother CS6000i, because I needed one of the best Brother sewing machine, something fast, adaptable, and transportable.

The Brother CS6000i is a computerized free arm machine. It has multiple stitch functions and is an extremely sound and affordable sewing machine for beginners. It has 60 built-in decorative stitch options with speeds of up to 850 stitches per minute. It allows you to select, adjust stitch length and width through the display.

If you are a tech-savvy beginner, then this model should be on that shortlist. It uses at least 120V AC. One step buttonholing is the best beginner sewing machine and the Brother CS6000i provides this. There is much less chance of misshapen or incomplete buttonholes. You have 7 different styles of buttonholing at your disposal.

With presser feet you have an enviable choice of 9 varieties. This means you can cope with a wide range of projects as your confidence grows. These presser feet span most operations, whether purely functional or more decorative.

Forward and reverse sewing is available. For beginners, this improves the ease of double-stitching. This seams without the need to stop and shift the fabric. Sewing dark fabrics is easy as it features a super bright sewing area. Accessing and setting your bobbin thread is easy.

It is equipped with an LCD screen that will allow you to customize various features. Some including an adjustable speed, auto-needle threader, diagrams to help you with threading and presser foot. It is jam-proof. The LCD display is crisp and easy to read. Navigation is a breeze. Choose your stitch by touch, and view it without confusion. You may store your accessories right at the arm of the machine.

The best part about this machine is that it is reliable. It includes many functions, and comes at an affordable price. I mean you may not go wrong with a Brother machine like this.

It has an extra-wide sewing machine table that is great for larger projects. For those of you still sewing off your old-mechanical of 20 years ago, have no fear. I found the easy to follow bilingual manual really helpful at explaining all the machine’s functions. The instructions and diagrams are perfect for visual learners like me. Besides, it has an all time warranty of 25 years.

I did find the light weight structure taking some time to master. Before I had a handle on it, I admit I did produce an uneven stitch or two. The combination of price and simplicity of use – the user-friendly manual means it’s quick to get going. Making this one of the most widely-sold machines for novices.

When I worked off heavier fabrics I did have the occasional jam and even broke a needle. When I tried to preplace the needle with a non-Brother one, I couldn’t. The machine works best with Brother products.

So, If you want an innovative and lightweight sewing machine for beginners, look no further than the well-reviewed Brother CS6000i. It is compact, easy to use and, as you progress, it will still serve you well. Brother CS6000i is best full-featured sewing machine for beginners but more advanced sewers still find it a pleasure to use. Its size is 16 x 6.7 x 11.4 inches.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Extra-wide Sewing Table
  • Multi-functional
  • Lightweight
  • Versatile

Cons

  • Wobbly
  • Not Good with Heavy Fabrics
  • Only Brother Compatible

Brother CS7000i Computerized Sewing Machine

Brother CS7000i Computerized Sewing Machine with 70 Built-in Stitches, White

Brother CS7000i is the new update of Brother CS6000i. It is perfect for beginners because it is extremely easy to use. However, intermediate and advanced users will find it impressive as well since it comes with dozens of advanced features that will awaken their creativity and add a new dimension to their projects.

Some of the highlighted features include adjustable sewing speed for complete control over your sewing projects, an automatic needle threader, 70 built-in stitches, a hard protective case with a wide table that is perfect for making quilts, 10 sewing and quilting feet, a jam-resistant quick-set drop-in top bobbin and so on. You will also get a printed quick-start guide, a bilingual instruction manual, and technical support.

Pros

  • Versatile
  • User-friendly
  • 70 built-in stitches
  • Easy stitch selection
  • Automatic needle threader
  • Jam-resistant quick-set drop-in top bobbin
  • Lots of sewing and quilting feet included
  • A quilt guide for beginners is included
  • Hard protective case with a large table
  • Adjustable sewing speed
  • Well-protected, stable and durable
  • Perfect for passionate quilters
  • A great choice for beginners
  • Feature-rich
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Not the best choice for heavy-duty sewing
  • Catches the thread when making buttonholes (but if you put your hand under the thread at the top of the unit, while doing this, it will prevent the thread from catching. Also, if you create your buttonholes on medium speed, the thread jerks less and is less likely to catch)
  • Not the most portable sewing machine (it weighs over 13 pounds)

Singer Quantum Stylist 9960 Sewing Machine

(Runner Up)

Singer 9960 Computerized Sewing Machine

I have been looking to purchase a new Singer, because my old one was starting to feel a bit too simple. When I test drove the Singer Quantum Stylist 9960, I fell in love!

When I saw the large LCD screen, which goes beyond typical display functions and serves as more of a digital information advisor, I was sold! It allows me to bring up stitch patterns and change the tension, length, and width in what can only be describe as a digital sewing workspace. The screen also includes a warning alarm and visual animation. They to help troubleshoot any stitching errors (have no fear, you can activate and deactivate these at will).

To add on top, it features a onetime functional stitch selection. All you require is a touch and your stitches will be displayed right on the front panel of the machine. The most you would have to do is touch the preferred stitch and kick off sewing. Besides, your 8 frequently used stitches would be displayed on the front panel.

There’s also a one-touch automatic thread cutter and needle threader; needle up/down button; a top drop-in bobbin system; a slow sewing speed option; and a lock stitch feature. Nevertheless, lots of accessories at your disposal!

The stitch pattern selection alone exceeds its competitors. It includes 600 built-in stitches with 13 styles of fully automatic one-step buttonholes, five different fonts, and 19 presser feet (I tend to buy a lot of feet, so yes, this is a huge plus!).

Talk of stability. The sturdy metal frame of the machine is built to deliver. The inner skeleton is made of a heavy duty metal. This issues great support cum durability, as the machine would rarely skip.

This may come across as a chic piece of technology, but once you learn the digital basics, you will have as much fun as I did. That is when I was getting to know and use all its features!

It prides a double needle setting that may be useful in achieving specific stiches. You would be able to reduce the width of stiches when using the twain needle function.

The Singer 9960 creates lovely stitches for projects ranging from garment production to home decorations, giving you a great deal of freedom to personalize your sewing experience and make one-of-a-kind products. Advanced sewers will find the versatility for lettering and decorative stitching liberating.

Now let us talk about the sewing machine light! I do most of my sewing at night, once the house has been put to rest, and so lighting is important. This machine’s two LED bulbs let me sew any time of day or night with ease.

Ok, so here is the kicker: though it can create 600 stitches, 850 each minute, more is not always best. Like most home sewers I mostly use basic stitches in my projects, and do not play around with the more elaborate ones. I have yet to even scratch the surface of using the amount of stitches this machine includes.

This sewing machine offers a lot of room to the front and left of the needle, so there is plenty of space for your hands to work in. It also includes an extra-large sewing machine table and drop feed for special projects. So why is this a con, you may be asking?

Well, with these factors in mind, it is a big machine. It gets my vote for best sewing machine for home use because you are not going to want to lug this thing around town.

I think this machine is suited for the experienced sewer, or someone who likes the challenge of figuring out a new piece of tech. With all the sewing and digital features there are to learn, it may be overwhelming for those of you who are just learning the basics.

The 240 plus dollar price tag may also make you newbies take pause. I suggest starting off with a less expensive machine before moving on to something like the Singer Quantum Stylist 9960, which is more complex and pricier. The machine itself weighs about 20 pounds with 17.2 by 8.2 by 12 inches in dimensions

Pros

  • Versatile
  • High Tech
  • Multi-functional
  • Durable.

Cons

  • A Bit Excessive
  • Heavy
  • Tough to Learn On

SINGER Stylist 7258 Sewing Machine

(Best Sewing Machine for All-Purpose)SINGER 7258 100-Stitch Computerized Sewing Machine

I bought the Singer Stylist 7258 for my niece Maya, because I had heard it was considered as the best learning tool. After a few practice runs, she was sewing her own cosplay costumes in no time.

It offers many lovely built-in stitch and presser feet options for fashion sewing, crafts, or home and decorative projects. It features up to 100 varying stiches, sewing 750 each minute. From 9 basic, 8 stretches, 76 decorative and 7 completely automated buttonholes. It has a 25 year limited warranty operating at 110 V only.

Its 750 stitches per minute quickens the sewing process thus saving time. Well if you are not after speed, you have an option to control your speed using the speed control lever. It lets you set a maximum and minimum speed depending on your preference.

I know you would wonder how to use the numerous stitches. The singer 7258 is fitted with a push button that acts as a stitch selector. You can easily make a selection of your desired stitch. It is only a push button away. The optimum settings that determine the tension, length and width are automatically set. They are preferably customized. Besides the width and length of the stitches are adjustable.

It includes automatic features like a self-threading needle option and LCD screen that illustrates different sewing patterns. A helpful see-thru bobbin allows users to keep tabs on their thread quantity. Forget about overfilled bobbins as the singer 7258 has an automatic bobbin winding clutch. The bobbin winder stops its movement automatically once the bobbin is fully filled.

Its automated threader is user friendly. You may thread the whole machine right from its spool right to the needles eye in a very short time. Surprisingly, the needle’s eye is threaded for you by the in-built needle threader in 6 seconds. This curbs eye strain and frustration. It has a twain needle capability.

The Singer Stylist 7258 features mentioned above, coupled with optional footer, start stop button, and electronic auto-pilot, will make any novice eager to stich on! For those who have never set up a sewing machine before, take my word. This is really easy to get sewing on. When I opened the box, I was surprised to find that the machine included a DVD called Ready, Set, Sew! This video does a great job at guiding new users through the ins and outs of the machine in a friendly, step by step manner.

The optional foot features three different options. An all-purpose foot on the machine, zipper foot and the buttonhole foot. They respectively specialize in most of the sewing tasks, add zippers, do cording, pipping etc., and add buttonholes, ribbon slots etc.

Despite the sturdy metal frame, often found on more expensive sewing machine models, I had a real issue with the Singer Stylist 7258 wobbling when I put it to higher speeds. This may be because it does not include an oversized sewing machine table, so the frame itself is not bottom heavy. It has a size measuring 14.5 x 7.5 x 12 inches.

Pros

  • Multi-functional
  • Motivational
  • Easy Set-up
  • It has an On board storage

Cons

  • Pricy
  • Performs Poorly at High Speeds
  • Small Sewing Table

SINGER Heavy Duty 4423 Sewing Machine

(Best Heavy Duty Sewing Machine for Beginners)

SINGER 4423 Heavy Duty Model Sewing Machine

My mother works off of a Singer machine from their Heavy-Duty line. She always mentions how, no matter if it is leather, 10 layers of curtains, or silk, that this machine gets the job done.

The Singer Heavy Duty 4423 features 23 built-in stitches; a fully automatic one step buttonhole; 25 years of warranty; top drop-in automatic needle threader; bobbin with clear cover; and Snap-on presser feet. If you are looking for speed, this machine has the capability of crafting 1,100 stitches per minute.

Its presser foot comes with four different presser feet boasting varying functionality. The all-purpose foot which is ideal for a majority of sewing tasks. The buttonhole foot is appropriate for adding ribbon slots, buttonholes and many more. The zipper foot is also included and lets you add zippers, cord, pipe etc. The button sewing foot is purposely for adding buttons.

The automated needle threading enables you to accurately and easily follow a printed path on the sewing machine. As a result, you neither undergo an eyestrain nor frustration as you thread the needle’s eye.

The speedy feature of the singer 4423, operating at 1100 stitches each minute, makes your sewing very quick. Its speed is complimented by a 60% advantaged motor strength which sees finer piercing ability and power for the thick seams.

I found this to be a simple machine with few functions, but it does provide a reliable stitch for a low price. It is built to last and pride durability, with lots of accessories at your disposal. The durability is engineered by its heavy duty metallic frame. The frame also stands in for the stability of the machine.

First off, this Singer sewing machine has no-frills! No embroidery, no tricky computer stuff. It does do everything a practical sewer needs, and it does it well. Operating at 110 Volts in US and Canada.

I love that this machine has stainless steel, plated parts. It feels like a solid product. Like my mom, I have sewn thick, rugged, and delicate materials—denim, vinyl, satin, Lycra-and the 4423 handles them all beautifully. In addition, you can do crafts, interior décor, fashions and more.

Because the machine works so fast, it took me some time to get a hang of the very sensitive foot pedal. Of course, high speeds mean a more powerful motor. I have a new baby in the house who needs his sleep, so I would much rather work off of a quieter machine. This one is a bit loud for my current lifestyle.

Nevertheless, Singer 4423 is described as a “true workhorse” with 15.5 x 6.2 x 12 inches in dimensions. This is because of its heavy duty metal frame on the interior, superlative speed, stainless steel bedplate, highly powered motor, and its ability to sew very heavy fabrics. In order to sew various fabrics, you adjust the pressure of the presser foot.

After some use I did run into a few mechanical problems that required repair. Presser foot misalignment, bobbin issues, timing belt and gears may need service sooner than later.

Pros

  • Practical
  • Stainless Steel Parts
  • Good with Multiple Fabrics
  • Multipurpose
  • Heavy duty sewing machine.

Cons

  • Too Fast
  • Noisy
  • You may experience string tangles
  • Mechanical Problems

Janome 2212 Sewing Machine

(Best Cheap Sewing Machine)

Janome 2212 Sewing Machine

Some believe that in our tech inundated world, it is best to learn to sew on a computerized sewing machine. From my experience working with new sewing students, I find that without a solid foundation in basic sewing machine structures and procedures, many will not fully grasp a sewing machine’s capabilities.

This no-nonsense sewing machine has 12 built-in stitches including a four step buttonhole function to quickly add buttons to a project. The stitches come out beautifully on this machine! I also just really love the look of this machine.

The Janome 2212 is a mechanical sewing machine that is above all dependable.

I continue to be amazed by the price of this Janome! Though the price tag may make you question its strength, as often cheaper machines cannot be used for serious work, take my word that the 2212 does a fine job on multilayer projects that require several layers.

It is great for novice sewers looking for a simple starter machine, or for advance sewers to use as a backup in case their sturdier machine needs a rest or repair.

I have carried the Janome 2212 sewing machine around in public and used it to teach others how to sew without using my more expensive model to do so. I believe it is one of the best sewing machines for kids to learn and practice on.

Janome 2212 sewing machine with only 12 stitch options, more experienced users may find this amount cumbersome, however for most projects, you will only use a few different stitches anyhow. It has a very high presser foot lift. When making stiches, I realized the maximum stitch length was around 4 mm and the width 5mm. In addition, when it comes to locking your stiches, it is very easy. This is because of the built in reverse lever.

Janome 2212 sewing machine is a front-loader, and so the wheel must be hand turned to correctly position your needle before you can start a new seam. If you do not do this the Janome 2212 sewing machine will jam up when you start stitching (trust me, I found this out the hard way!). It did not take me too long to master the hand wheel, however, but a beginner may have more difficulty than they would with a top-loader. It took me a few tries to get the feel of the presser feet and bobbin adjustment as well. At 15 pounds, and 17 by 9 by 13.5 inches, it considered sizeable.

I found that this machine did not do well on leather and suede; fur; reptile skin; canvas and twill; plastic and rubber; extra thick fabrics or multiple layers. That said, sewers out there will have an extra difficult time working off of this machine, as it does not include an oversized sewing machine table to work with bulkier fabrics.

Pros

  • Great Price
  • Good Learning Tool
  • Well Built and Reliable
  • It is simple
  • It is dependable

Cons

  • Needle Jams
  • Not Good of Thick Fabrics
  • Small Sewing Table

Singer Start 1304 Sewing Machine

(Best Compact Sewing Machine for Beginners)

SINGER Start 1304 6 Built-in Stitches Sewing Machine

Singer 1304 is an electric sewing machine made portable with 6 in-built stitches and very suitable for beginners in sewing.

With the 6 stitch options, you are prompted to make a choice simply by the press of a dial. One of the main reasons why I would highly recommend the Singer Starter for beginners, is the preset stitch measurements. The width and length of the stiches are predetermined. You do not have to struggle hustling for figures.

Your options would range from a straight stitch recommended for fundamental sewing. Otherwise, you would sew an applique made with a zigzag stitch.

You would easily add your button holes to creations using the four step buttonhole feature. Its workspace is a slide off extension table that is removable. The table exposes a free arm used for hemming sleeves and trousers

Differentiating it from the other sewing machines, is the portability, simplicity and ease of carriage and storage.

Threading has been made easy using the threading diagram calibration. The diagrams are printed on the sewing machine. This saves time and eases up the whole threading process. The four step buttonholing is automatic.

Twain needle sewing is powered by the dual spool pins. The spool pins are vertical and apparently make the sewing process a walk in the moon. Suppose you are not interested in a twain type of sewing; you have an option to do it single. Myself I prefer my creations to have a double and parallel stitching. It adds a beautiful touch to creations.

Singer Starter is all easy. Selecting your stiches is made possible using a stitch selection dial which changes the stitches in one simple step. Still qualifying the Singer Starter for beginners and learners. It weighs 12.7 pounds and has a size of 13 by 7 by 11.5 inches.

Talk of sturdiness, the internal skeleton used in the machine is engineered with a heavy duty metal which enhances stability. This skeleton mechanically adds a touch of perfection to the machine’s alignment. As a result, the machines offers an assured durability and skip less sewing.

Pros

  • Heavy Duty
  • Easy
  • Light weight

Cons

  • Fixed Stitch width control

Your sewing machine must have automated features that require no user involvement besides the basic functions. These features include a built-in needle threader, easy stitch selection, needle tension, and so on. Also, make sure that your sewing machine comes with all the accessories needed to get you started.

Budget

Choose a beginner’s machine that is reasonably-priced. Usually, entry-level sewing machines cost less in comparison to mid-entry and heavy-duty sewing machines. Not only that your first sewing unit is supposed to be easy to use but also durable, lightweight and easy to store. I kindly recommend that you choose a sewing machine that does not heat up if used for hours. Also, choose a portable sewing machine in case you want to take it to a sewing class or move it around.

Sewing Machine Buying Tips

Making Clothes

If your principle intention is to sew your own garments, check that the machine offers various finishing options and button hole making. Variable stitch lengths and a twin needle setting are invaluable.

Home Decoration

Most types of home decoration call for a fairly heavy duty sewing machine.

Think about curtain fabrics, cushions and upholstery. All of these are medium to heavy in terms of weight. Make sure that if this is your prime intended usage. Afterwards you may opt for something which can handle the job.

Quilting

The basic sewing machines will not make the grade if you want to produce larger quilts. Therefore you equally need to look out for the best sewing machine for quilting. This would be helpful to get large and fine quilts.

Most of the entry-level sewing machine models, while fine for many purposes, lack the necessary attachments for successful quilting. The cheaper and less advanced machines are simply too limited.

Now that you have thought seriously about your comfort with technology and the reason you want the sewing machine, here are some general pointers.

Tips On How To Choose Your First Sewing Machine

  • Understand your needs before you buy a sewing machine. Ask yourself if you want a machine that is simple and basic or something more advanced. Also, do you want a combination machine (sewing and embroidery)? What is your goal? What do you want to accomplish with your unit?
  • Determine your budget. High-end sewing machine costs a lot. However, if you are a beginner and you need something for completing basic sewing tasks, look for a low-cost sewing machine.
  • I suggest that you do not focus on the number of built-in stitches because you will never use all of them. Most sewing machines come with basic stitches, so that is just enough for a beginner.
  • Order from a popular brand like Singer, Brother, Janome, Juki, EverSewn, Baby Lock, and so on.
  • Pay attention to the design of your machine. Check if your sewing machine has pictorial steps on the surface for easy operation. Check if your sewing machine has an automatic needle threader. Other features like bobbin winder, free arm, adequate work area lighting and so on should be considered as well. Attachments like complimentary padel and types of buttonholes, presser feet and tools matter too. Also, always refer to the user manual before you use your machine.

What Type Of Sewing Machine Is Best For Beginners?

What type of sewing machine is best for you depends on your level of expertise, budget and what you want to achieve.

It also depends on the fabrics that you plan to work with.

Keep reading to find out what is the main purpose of a sewing machine for leather, canvas, quilting, auto upholstery, jeans, and more.

You can choose between mechanical and computerized sewing machines. The mechanical sewing unit is a super popular choice among beginners. The needle of this type of machine is driven by a mechanical force carried by electrical power while computerized sewing machines feature a large LCD touch screen.

The mechanical force in a computerized sewing machine is still present, however, it can be manipulated by a computer interface. You can also pick a sewing machine with a free arm, with extra embroidering features, with extra quilting features and machines for specially-abled. You can also purchase a serger.

This is a modern, advanced type of machine used by fashion designers and professionals. They usually use sergers to make stronger stitches. Most home-based businesses own a sewing and embroidery unit and a serger to meet their clients’ requirements and take care of everything associated with garments.

Sewing Machine For Leather

Sewing leather can also be done with the hand. And it can be rewarding. But it is also time-consuming and takes much effort. This is where a sewing machine for leather kicks in. Purchasing a special machine for leather can be understandable for beginners. But if you plan to work with leather, you will need one.

It will certainly simplify your work and help you finish heavy-duty projects that include leather faster.

Buying a dedicated machine for leather is a must if you work specifically with leather since a regular one cannot handle thick or stubborn materials. You can try to sew leather with a household sewing machine.

However, you will not get the wanted results. On the contrary, what you might get is a needle breakage. And this can ruin your project because unwanted, ugly-looking holes in leather cannot be undone. So, if you are a beginner and want a leather machine, I suggest that you read our reviews before you buy one.

Sewing Machine For Canvas

Canvas is another stubborn material that requires a dedicated heavy-duty sewing machine. Most people who deal with stubborn or thick materials and fabrics, purchase a commercial sewing machine. So, if you plan to sew canvas regularly or need a machine for heavy duty work, buy a commercial sewing machine.

It can handle different types of materials since it is designed for professional tasks only. Different models offer different specializations. You can purchase a commercial sewing machine if you sew a lot or plan to develop your hobby into a full-time job and open your business.

Sewing Machine For Quilting

Are you into quilting? If you are a beginner, you probably wonder if a household sewing machine can do the quilting. Yes, it can, to some extent. However, dedicated sewing machine for quilting have features that normal machines do not such as wide tables for making the best quilt and customization resources.

They offer easier threading than regular sewing machines as well. When quilting, you will have to switch your stitch at a certain point. And dedicated quilting machines provide switch stitches mid-stream and have different custom features that will help with your quilting.

Sewing Machine For Auto Upholstery

If you are a beginner, you wonder why do you need a dedicated sewing machine for auto upholstery. If you plan to work with heavier thick and stubborn fabrics, you will need one, trust me. They are made to handle oversized projects with their special features. And they provide professional-looking results fast.

A regular sewing machine would fail to sew through the stubborn fabric on a regular basis. Jamming or needle breaks will become your everyday routine if you want to sew complex fabrics with a household machine that has a less powerful motor. For the best product recommendations, check our reviews.

Sewing Machine For Jeans

Looking for a sewing machine that can handle canvas, leather or other thick fabrics, especially jeans? If yes, you will need a dedicated machine for jeans. In fact, you will need a heavy duty sewing machine to handle stubborn materials with special construction methods and high-quality parts to keep them firm.

Heavy duty sewing machines sew at a higher speed than regular sewing machines which is exactly what you need for sewing jeans. They are more stable, lasting and sturdy.

When you dive into the magical world of sewing and start searching for your first sewing machine, you will notice two brands popping often, especially if you shop online – Singer and Brother.

They represent two of the most popular brands on the market in the sewing industry for years. And for a good reason.

Both brands have sewing machines that will fit every sewer’s needs, no matter their level of expertise, budget or expectations. You can find their sewing machines in online stores such as Amazon.

However, in order to help you choose which one to trust first, I will review their machines for beginners in detail.

Brother has some of the best sewing machines for beginners, intermediate users, quilters and experts. However, they also have a popular Serger sewing machine, in case you are interested.

However, back to their sewing machines for beginners, there is one model that is popular among old and new customers.

It is the Brother CS6000i – best selling entry-level sewing machine at the moment. Thanks to the acceptable price, sturdiness, and simplicity, this machine has become Brother’s greatest invention.

No matter if you are looking for a sewing machine with embroidery or want a beginner sewing machine for quilting, CS6000Ii has your back. If you want the best beginner sewing machine for clothes, this is it.

It is also the perfect machine for beginners and advanced users. And you can find it for as little as $150.

However, this brand has high-end sewing machines that cost over $1000 such as the SE1800 machine. If this is your first time hearing of Brother, you probably do not know that they have top-notch products.

It is so because they incorporate high technology into their basic sewing machines as well. They have a long history in the sewing industry and a well-deserved reputation because they provide affordable but rich in feature machines. If you want to take a look at their best products, check our dedicated article.

Singer Sewing Machines For Beginners

Although Brother is popular in the sewing industry, it has nothing on Singer – another brand with a good reputation earned by manufacturing some of the greatest sewing machines for over 200 years. The story of Singer began in 1851. Meaning, they bring years of experience to the market and know how to use it.

One of their best selling machines that is perfect for beginners is the Singer 7258 – portable, stable and affordable at the same time. It comes with 100 built-in stitches and other advanced features.

You can find this entry-level model for as little as $200. However, the company has some salty machines that cost over $1000. One of them is the Singer SE300. As you can notice, both brands offer reasonably-priced sewing machines that can meet every sewer’s expectations without breaking their bank account.

However, which one is better?

This is a hard question to answer since we are talking about two prominent brands loved by thousands of satisfied customers. However, just like every other brand in the world, these two have their pros and cons. For example, Brother makes better sewing machines for beginners that will help them boost skills.

Singer, on the other hand, is focused on making heavy-duty sewing machines and focuses on advanced users. However, it doesn’t mean that they do not make great entry-level models. As for the prices, both brands placed reasonably-priced. In fact, they have the same marketing strategies and target audience.

In order to make up your mind, you have to know what exactly are you looking for and review our chart with details about the best sewing machines for beginners 2020 and 2021. Instead of pointing focus on specific brands, focus on features, warranty, and of course, price. Do you prefer a mechanical machine?

Or you want a computerized model? Will you complete basic sewing projects? Or want something that can handle stubborn fabrics such as denim, leather, canvas and so on? If you are on a budget and need something to help you complete basic sewing projects, you can find a good machine for as little as $100.

What is the Most Reliable Sewing Machine?

Manual sewing machines come at a lower cost. However, they also require advanced sewing skills. This does not mean that a beginner cannot learn these skills but if you are a beginner and choose a manual sewing machine, there are chances that you will damage your sewing machine by accident, somehow.

Choose a sewing machine with automatic options. The most reliable sewing machines provide multiple stitching settings. Basic sewing machines for beginners come with a dozen stitches that you can find very useful. If you decide to make an upgrade and pick an automatic sewing unit, you will get +100 stitches.

Also, you will get some buttonhole alternatives, so you can leave a personal touch on your garments. If you buy this type of machine, you will have to feed the material properly in order to get an outstanding result. Look for a sewing machine with autopilot settings that can help you finish tasks out of the home.

Average manual sewing machines are controlled by a foot pedal. it acts like an accelerator pedal in a car. Yes, you manipulate the speed. But this boosts the chances of mistakes. A quality sewing machine allows you to set the speed with a touch or button instead of maintaining the speed until you finally turn it off.

I personally recommend the Brother CS6000i sewing machine for newbies. It is a favorite among sewers without experience. It is a computerized unit that gives beginners directions on threading, installing and winding the bobbin. It also gives you points on displaying presser foot suggestions when picking a stitch.

This machine has 60 built-in stitches, a speed control slider, a large table, and a needle threader. Easy to use and reliable, this sewing machine will become your new best friend. It is versatile and keeps the first spot at Amazon’s best-selling sewing machine for beginners’ lists. Another amazing machine is XM2701.

It is another sewing unit by Brother that I recommend for enthusiastic sewers who want to start with an amazing but simple sewing machine. It is lightweight, reliable and ideal for basic sewing projects. If you want to sew denim and canvas, you will need a heavy-duty sewing unit, like Singer 4423 or Singer 4432.

What Does a Beginner Sewer Need?

If you want to learn how to sew by hand, get familiar with the tools required for hand sewing first. One of the most important tools for hand sewing is the needle but hand sewing needles and machine sewing needles differ. A hand needle has an eye at the top which is quite smaller than a machine needle’s eye.

Machine needles, on the other hand, have an eye at the bottom and their top is wider. The next sewing tool that you need to learn is the thread. Hand sewing threads are usually thinner than machine threads.

You will also need thread clippers for cutting the thread, scissors, and a thimble to protect your fingers. Once you have these main tools, you can start your journey. First, you need to trim the thread.

It should become narrow enough to pass through the needle eye easily. Once you have this done, it is time to pull it to approximately 18 inches. Tie a knot at the end. That is it. Hand sewing can be done with different stitches in order to accomplish your imagined results but the simplest one is the running stitch.

It is frequently used in repairs and other similar things. Also, it is most popular among beginners. Now, how about you try it? As you can notice, sewing by hand is not that hard as it seamed before you knew the steps. Hand sewing can save you time and money. Also, it is a great hobby for expressing creativity.

What Do You Need to Start Sewing?

As a beginner, it is important to learn all the sewing tools before you dive into the craft. Let’s learn what goes in a starter kit and review each tool one by one, so you can easily consume all the new information.

Buttons and extra fasteners

Having tools like zippers, snaps, buttons and other fasteners can help you make fast, efficient repairs.

Fabric marking pens

Usually, sewing kits come with a water-soluble fabric marking pens that can help you measure, mark and cut your fabric accurately. Putting your fabric in the washing machine will make the markings disappear.

Hand-sewing needles

If you want to sew by hand, you will need a lot of sewing needles in various sizes and lengths. Most kits come with all the sewing needles you need, however, make sure that the ones you get have large eyes.

Measuring tape

Every sewer needs a measuring tape in order to measure before cutting fabric, so consider this a MUST.

A needle threader

A needle threader can save you a lot of nerves. If you wonder why just remember the times when you tried to thread a needle. Also, owning a needle threader prevents eyestrain which is bad for your eyes.

A magnetic pin holder

Long-time sewers know this item as a pincushion. Some sewing kits come with a magnetic pin holder but some have a pincushion. Either way, this item is important in order to keep your straight pins organized.

Sewing scissors

Some sewing kits provide sewing scissors. Others have pinking shears. Advanced sewing kits offer both. This sewing tool is one of the most important ones because you cannot cut fabric with just any scissors.

A seam ripper

If you are a long-time sewer, you probably know that seams can be annoyingly stubborn. However, this tool is made to deal with stubborn seams and make your sewing a lot easier, so make sure you get one.

Straight pins and thimble

I recommend that you choose straight pins with round heads. In my opinion, they are a lot easier to use than straight pins with flat heads. Thimbles, on the other hand, are sewing tools created to protect your fingers from sharp needles. Also, you can use a thimble in order to push a needle through heavy fabrics.

Thread

Make sure that the sewing kit you buy has a lot of threads in various colors. And I suggest that you buy a spool of invisible thread as well. If you work with something yellow or white but do not have a yellow or white thread to sew with, an invisible thread can get the job done. It is a smart suggestion, am I correct?

Durable case

Finally, you will need a durable case, basket or container to store all these tools. Usually, kits come with a case with fasteners that will keep your accessories in place. This is a nice option for newbies, hobbyists and DIY enthusiasts. However, as your skills improve, your need for an advanced kit will increase as well.

And by advanced, I mean a better sewing kit with extra supplies like iron-on tape, elastic, gauges, and so on. For now, I suggest that you focus on finding a lightweight, portable, and compact sewing kit that has all the necessary tools to get you started. Also, make sure that the one you choose has positive reviews.

Sewing For Beginners Without Machine: 7 Tips You Need To Remember

Pick The Right Needle

A needle represents an essential part of your hand sewing. So, you need to pay attention to picking the right needle for your sewing project. For finishing a heavy-duty sewing project, choose a thicker needle.

Choose The Right thread

Thread is the second most important part of your sewing, no matter if it is machine or hand sewing. For best recommendations and tips, check our guide on how to pick the best thread for your sewing project.

Wax Your Thread

If you want a tangle-free thread, I suggest that you wax your thread often. You can use thread heaver or beeswax. Waxing your thread allows easier insertion, prevents frying and tangling as well. So, why not?

Always Use a Safety Pin

For elastic insertion use a small pin for a small elastic casing and a big safety pin for a large elastic casing.

Iron Before and After Sewing

Ironing your fabric before sewing will provide more precise measurement while ironing your fabric after, provides professional-looking results at home. So, make sure to iron before and after you finish sewing.

Tissue Paper For Slippery Fabric

Placing tissue paper under slippy materials will prevent them from slipping. It allows easy cutting as well.

Learn How to Use a Tumble

Wearing a tumble feels uncomfortable and weird at first. However, once you get used to it, it becomes an inseparable sewing accessory. It prevents finger injury and helps you push the fabric with great ease.

Once you apply these tips, nothing can stop you from realizing your wildest sewing dreams. Oh, and do not forget to check for some cool beginner sewing machine patterns, if you ever use a sewing machine.

Basic Sewing Machine Preparation And Maintenance: 4 Steps To Follow

In case you have already bought a sewing machine and do not know how to use it and maintain it, this is the article for you. Just follow these four simple steps and you will get your new toy started in a minute.

Check The Threads

Make sure that you are using the same color threads on top and bottom spools. However, you can use a different color if you are decorating. Also, you need to use the same type of thread since it helps you get an evenly transpassed tension while sewing. Next, you should prepare the fabric that you will be sewing.

Prepare The Fabric

Fabric preparation is one of the commonly overlooked steps when it comes to machine preparation. If you do not prepare your fabric properly and make sure that it stands smooth and flat before you begin with sewing, you will face a lot of feeding challenges. You can start with pressing (ironing) the material.

Straight Feeding

Another common issue you might face before you begin with sewing is straight feeding. Did you know that stray stitches represent a result of bad feeding? You should feed the fabric properly and precisely.

Check for a guideline that usually comes with sewing machines. If you cannot find one, just hold it firmly along the lines. Or you can test your sewing machine with a test fabric until you get the right position in which you can hold the fabric. Begin stitching slowly. Increase pace as you gain a feeling that you should.

Maintaining Your Sewing Machine

If you want your sewing machine to last, you have to keep it clean and oiled. Regular cleaning is a must for extending the life of your new toy. Clean the feed dogs, teeth, and needle system occasionally. Also, do not forget to oil your sewing machine. If you do not know how to do it, check our dedicated article.

A Buyer’s Guide for Beginner Sewing Machines

Still having trouble deciding what is the best sewing machine for you? Let this buyer’s guide help you answer a few important questions before making your purchase.

Watch video: How to Use your Sewing Machine (for Beginners)
1) What Are You Looking to Spend?
  • Sewing machines can run the gamut of prices, anywhere from under $100 dollars to well into the thousands. There will always be a machine just out of your price range, offering just a little more pop for a price. Decide on what you are willing to spend and begin your search from there.
  • If you are strapped for cash but still want a first-rate product, here’s the deal: check out second hand machines. It may be better to work off a second-hand machine that gets the job done, than skimping on both cost and quality.
2) Do You Want a Mechanical or Computerized Sewing Machine?
  • Most high-end machines come with LCD screens and USB friendly portals for downloading and programming stitch patterns. These tend to be more expensive than mechanical machines, so if your budget is tight, you may opt for the latter.
  • Do not let the old school sound of a mechanical machine scare you. Many choose this option because computerized machines come with computerized problems. There are also many pluses to owning a mechanical machine. They are often lighter, built with less parts, so they can be carried around to classes, sewing circles, or to any corner of your home with ease. Servicing and maintenance is often cheaper and easier of these products.
  • Mechanical machines are great starter machines that will meet all your basic sewing needs. If you are going to go mechanical, remember that a second-hander from a reputable maker is a better purchase than a cheaper, plastic one.

Now: We are living in the age of tech, after all, and computerized sewing machines are fun! They have lots of poor and do not struggle with heavier fabrics. They offer superior stitch quality with even spacing and stronger stitching.

You can program your computerized machine so that it remembers a stitch sequence. I would therefore recommend a computerized sewing machine for beginners to aged people. It would be helpful in helping to memorize various stiches. They also offer tens to hundreds of decorative and embroidery options, auto thread cutting, and more.

3) Is The Sewing Machine Motor Big or Small?
  • The heavier the sewing machine motor, the heavier and stronger the machine is. A strong, heavy motor will make it easier to cope with frequent use and heavier fabrics, such as upholstery-weight fabrics and denim.
  • A machine that is predominantly plastic will not withstand the kind of use that a machine with metal parts can. Of course, if you know you are going to need to transport your machine frequently, even if it is just in and out of a cupboard, you need to decide if a heavy machine is impractical and whether you want to compromise with a machine that has a plastic body, but metal parts.
4) What Stitches Do You Plan to Use?
  • Consider what products you plan on making and what type of stitch you will need to make it. In general, a straight or zig zag stitch will suit most users’ basic needs, giving you the freedom to create what you want to without much hassle.
  • Many machines today do have the added benefit of preprogrammed stitches running into the hundreds. Most look fantastic, and it is great to have the option to have some fun with your fabric. Having limited options, though, should not be a deal breaker if one with a low stitch count catches your fancy.
5) Is Stitch Length and Width Adjustable?
  • Width and length adjustment are valuable options to have in a machine. Stitch length is important because of the way certain fabrics react to certain stitches, or to sew certain areas of a project. Knits and spandex perform better with longer, looser stitches, while inflexible fabrics like canvas fair better with shorter, tighter stitches
  • Most mid- to high range machines will have an adjustable stitch option. Some of the cheaper models may skip this feature.
6) What Comes with The Machine?
  • Presser feet are a vital factor to sewing; a buttonhole foot, zipper foot, and hem foot will also be important if your plan is to make clothing, for example. Patchwork quilting will require a walking foot, and a freehand foot will be necessary for doing any embroidery. You will want to make sure an assortment is included with your machine, or that they can be purchased separately and at a decent price.
  • If you plan to use an assortment of feet, also check if your machine includes Snap-On feet. These make switching back and forth between feet quick and easy.
7) What Is the Machine’s Make and Brand?
  • The make and brand of a sewing machine is very important not only to the life of the product, but to your sewing experience as well. Successful brands, as you can see here is this post, include Brother, Singer, and Janome. Most department stores carry these brands, which are geared toward hobbyists. They are light, have small motors and internal parts, and tend to have a plastic build.
  • Pfaff, Husqvarna, and Bernina sewing machines, on the other hand, are all high-end machines that come with a higher price tag. These are professional sewing machines, or those who stitch on the regular. Big department stores will probably not carry these. Therefore, you will need to contact a dealer if you plan to purchase any of these.

What’s the bottom line? For a more enjoyable sewing experience, buy the best budget sewing machine for beginners from a reputable company, rather than spending higher for a hobby machine.

8) How Noisy Is the Machine?
  • Take a moment to consider when and where you will use your machine. After work, and after the kids have gone to bed, are common times people sew. If you live in a small to average size space, you are not going to get a machine that bellows throughout the hallways. You will want to purchase a quieter inexpensive sewing machine.
  • Don’t be afraid to check out your machine’s noise level in the store of dealership before making your purchase.
9) How Frequently Will You Use Your Machine?
  • If you are only going to use your machine for the occasional hem or repair, and do not think your machine will make it out of the closet more than once or twice a month, then a heavy duty sewing machine is not a smart investment.
  • If, however, you think your new machine will be put to work weekly or even daily in your sewing studio, and your budget can accommodate, go for one in heavy duty sewing machine or a computerized model. It will make your sewing experience pleasurable.
  • Computerized, high-end machines take some time to learn. A mechanical sewing machine may only require threading and plugging in. Consider how you handle technology, how much time you have to learn something new, and if the frustration that may come with learning your new machine will put you off the task of actually sewing.
10) What Do You Want to Sew or Make?
  • If you are a beginner, buy a machine that offers more than your basic attachments. Look for larger work tables and machines powerful enough to toil through multiple layers of fabric.
  • If you want to make your own design, look for a machine that has adjustable stitch lengths. In addition, one that can support a diversity of fabrics, and has a variety of buttonhole options.
  • Upholsterers will want heavy duty sewing machines that can sew through tough fabric without a reputation for jamming.

What Are the Main Parts of a Sewing Machine?

The needle; Feed dogs; Rotary hook; Motor; Timing belts

What Is a Sewing Machine Needle?
Sewing machine needles are used in sewing machines. Do not let its simple looks fool you. They are actually made up of seven different parts! Most sewing machine needles are finished with hardened chrome-plated steel, though some rarer ones are coated with titanium instead of chrome. They come in different sizes and types depending on your sewing needs.

What Are Feed Dogs?
Sewing machine feed dogs are metal teeth-like edges that arise from an opening in the metal plate beneath your sewing machine’s needle. As you sew, your feed dogs move, lightly gripping the underside of your fabric to help move it through the sewing machine.

What Does a Presser Foot Do?
A presser foot is an attachment used with sewing machines to grip fabric flat as it moves through the machine and gets stitched.

What Is a Foot Pedal?

A foot pedal is not unlike the pedals in a car. It is a pedal that rests on the floor of your sewing space and essentially lets you control the function and speed of your machine by pressing it with your foot. This frees up your hands from needing to press the start/stop button on your machine so you can concentrate on guiding your fabric.

What Are the Belts in A Sewing Machine Used for?

Sewing machine timing belts coordinate the sewing machine parts to achieve even stitches on your fabric.

What Is the Difference Between a Long Stitch and a Short Stitch?
  • Shorter stitches will fit more stitch into an inch of fabric, resulting in a tighter stitch. Longer stitches pack fewer stitch per inch, resulting in a looser stitch.
  • The stitch width determines how wide each stitch is made. Essentially, this function determines how much fabric is fed under the presser foot.

Final Words

Now I realize that these are both pretty expensive, professional models

    1. Dear,

      Thank you for your comment.

Sewing doesn’t care about your age! You can be any age and still learn how to sew. Or just play around with a sewing machine. It’s a fun practice that you can teach your kids too!

Learning how to sew together with your kids can be a lovely experience. It will strengthen your bond but most importantly, it will teach your kids something they can use later in life.

Have a lovely day and stay safe.

      Love, Mary.

  1. Which sewing machine would you recommend for a ten year old girl? My daughter did a sewing summer camp last year and loved it. As the pandemic hits where we live, it is unlikely that she will be able to do any camp this summer. I would love to get her a sewing machine so she can have some projects going and learn more about sewing during the summer.

    1. Will the Janome Easy to Use Sewing Machine Sorbet be a good alternative to the Janome Graceful Gray Sewing Machine (currently sold out) for my 9-yo daughter?

      1. Dear Sophie,

        Thank you for your comment.

Yes, Sorbet is a great alternative to the Janome Graceful Gray sewing machine. However, as I can notice, they’re both unavailable at Amazon at the moment.

You can search for them at other online or local stores or you can just wait until they come back in stock. Have a wonderful day and stay safe.

        Love, Mary.

    2. Dear Sophie,

Thank you for trusting my opinion.

Normally, I would recommend the Janome Graceful Gray or Brother XM2701 for young sewers. Brother XM1010 and Singer 1304 also make great choices for beginners.

However, because of the crisis, they’re all out of stock, except for Singer 1304. If you’re not in a hurry, wait until they’re back in stock.

If not, consider some of the available machines listed in this article. They’re listed right under the ‘How to Make a Mask’ section.

Hopefully, my answer can help you choose the right sewing machine for your daughter.

Have a wonderful day and stay safe.

      Love, Mary.

  2. Stephanie Coffee

    Hello Jane,
    Great article, thank you!
I’m in a pickle and need your guidance/opinion. I’m a beginner, was looking for a computerized sewing machine with automatic needle threader. Mostly for sewing clothes/fashion. After reading your article, I decided between the Brother Cs6000i, Singer 7258 or even the Brother cs7000i. Searched high and low, I can’t find any of them for sale. 🙁 Can you reccomend similar models?

    1. Dear Stephanie,

Thank you for your comment and for trusting my opinion.

Unfortunately, the sewing machines you’ve mentioned aren’t available at the moment due to the crisis. If you’re not in a hurry, you could wait until they come back.

However, if you’re in a hurry, please check the list of sewing machines in stock and ready to ship. It’s at the beginning of this article. And I will update it every three days.

I would recommend Necchi Q132A or KPZ Mini Sewing Machine. They’re easy to use and great for basic projects. Therefore, they make a great choice for beginners and professionals.

Also, they’re two of the few sewing machines still in stock and ready to ship.

Have a nice day and stay safe.

      Love, Mary.

  3. Hi Mary, thank you for all this useful information! While shopping for a few of the machines, a lot of them are sold out or discontinued. The one I really had my eye on was the Singer 7256, but it says online that it was discontinued. Do you know of any other good, available models similar to that?
    Thanks!

    1. Dear Eleanor,

      Thank you for your comment.

I would recommend the Singer 4452 sewing machine. It’s still in stock and comes with similar features as the Singer 7256. However, it’s slightly better and faster.

This baby has a speed of 1,100 stitches per minute, a built-in needle threader, a sturdy construction, and 32 built-in sewing stitches including 1 fully automatic 1-step buttonhole.

If you want to check other Singer sewing machines, please read my Singer reviews. Hopefully, my review can help you make a smart decision.

Have a nice day and stay safe.

      Love, Mary.

  4. Hi Mary Jane.

I greatly appreciate the detailed reviews and suggestions that you provide on your website. I’ve been overwhelmed through this process of trying to choose a sewing machine for our 10-year-old granddaughter who lives with us. I would like to choose a machine that I, too, can use, and that she can start with and grow into. I settled on the Brother CS6000i, but then could not find it apart from an Ebay seller offering it for $350. I also found many reviews on the Brother site describing a similar horror story and decided that if I’m going to spend $300-$400, I’d ratchet up to another machine. With all that you offer on your site, I’m uncomfortable asking this, but … If you were to buy one machine today that a beginner and intermediate sewer could share, which above the others would you choose? My hope is to order this today. I will OF COURSE understand if your time and attention are already maxed throughout this painful season of Coronavirus. Your already offer a surfeit of helpful information.

    Wishing you well.
    Susan

    1. Dear Susan,

Thank you for your comment and for trusting my opinion.

The machine I would recommend for both beginners and intermediate users is the Janome 8077 sewing machine. It’s a computerized machine with 30 built-in stitches.

It’s doesn’t overcome your budget. And it’s still available for purchase at Amazon which is not something I can say about many machines these days because of the virus situation.

The reason why I recommend this machine is because it’s loaded with amazing features including a large and bright 2-digit LED screen for easy stitch selection and superb feeding system.

It also has easily adjustable stitch width and length with a touch of a button and free arm capability.

You can never go wrong with a Janome machine because they’re built to last. Hopefully, my short review can help you choose the right sewing machine for you and your granddaughter.

Have a wonderful day and stay safe.

      Love, Mary.

      1. Mary, my cup runneth over. I found myself choking up while reading your warm, generous reply, and I’m certain that my reaction was not rooted only in the emotion of this season. You took the time to share your inside knowledge with me so I could make the right choice for my granddaughter. Over these last two days, I wavered between the Brother CS6000i and the 7000i, from one to the other and back over a dozen times. Just as I’d found myself thoroughly confused with zero rudder, I found your email. I am going to place my order tomorrow. I love that your spirit will be intrinsically linked to the cozy, creative times that my granddaughter and I will share while using the sewing machine that you hand-picked for us.

From the bottom of my heart I thank you.
Sending love and best wishes right back at you.
        Susan

        1. Dear Susan,

There is no need to thank me! Thank you for trusting my opinion. The first sewing machine for beginners I would think of is the legendary Brother CS6000i

However, since you stated that you want something that brings more value for your money, I thought of 8077 by Janome. I’m so glad that I could help.

Say hello to your granddaughter from me.

Have a wonderful day you both and happy sewing.

          Love, Mary.

  5. Hello there! My name is Lynn. I’ve waited long enough. I’m going to sew. I hope you’ll help me.

I read your *Best of* recommendations (nice job, by the way). As I linked to Amazon, none of the machines I’m interested in are available. In searching over the past 2 hours, I have found that Walmart sells sewing machines! Would you be willing to look at this machine and tell me what you think? It’s not on your list, and I have no point of reference to make a comparison. I’ve never driven a sewing machine ?

I’ve already ordered it with my Walmart Pickup Grocery order for Sunday because the pickup times are so limited – there was only one left for the next 5 days… I can return it, of course.

I’m 52 years old. I’ve wanted to sew since I was in my 20s. I still remember my mom’s green singer machine in a wooden case (this thing folded down!). It had this big wheel on the end that she turned to make the motor start (I think that’s what it was for) I loved the sound of that big green wheel… Anyway, it didn’t work out for me to learn as a child/teenager then college + life = 52 years old. My daughter is in college. I am in between foster children. I’m social distancing… it’s a good time.

Thank you so much & if you don’t have time or don’t even get this comment (are you famous?), it’s totally okay – I’m typing this on a late-night whim that you might answer.

    Lynn

    1. Dear Lynn,

Thank you for your comment and kinds words.

The quote you stated is very true. It’s important to help those in need, especially in times like this. And for the record, no I’m not famous! I’m just a normal seamstress with a computer and lots of experience with sewing machines. I’ve been sewing since I was little.

And I’m so happy that you finally decided to follow your passion. You’re right. It’s the perfect time to do it. I have researched the model that you ordered from Walmart.

And it turns out that it’s a good sewing machine for beginners. It’s perfect for both heavy-duty and basic projects thanks to the wide selection of stitches and a wide table.

It’s also loaded with 10 feet for quilting and sewing and has a big LCD screen for easy stitch selection but what I like the most is the automatic needle threading system.

All these features make the SQ9285 perfect for beginners. Oh, and you will get a DVD with instructions. This is helpful but you can also watch YouTube videos on how to use it.

So far, this machine sounds impressive. However, I discovered from reviews that a few customers have a bad experience with this machine. They’ve experienced tension issues.

Also, they claim that the machine isn’t great for bulkier projects. If I were you, I would give this machine a try because the positive reviews outweigh the negative ones.

Please, check the warranty to see if you’re covered in case something goes wrong.

Again, I’m so happy that you decided to follow your passion and sew. Hopefully, my answer can help you somehow.

Have a wonderful day and stay safe.

P.S. When you receive your machine and try it out for the first time, let me know how it goes.

      Love, Mary.

      1. Dear Mary – I’m so excited you answered!! I’ve been out today making a gift delivery to a colleague who had a death in her family, and I could not wait to get home to see if I had a comment from you

I’m actually going to Walmart this afternoon – decided can’t wait until Sunday for a few of the groceries I need (and sewing machine!). Are there other things I should pick up? Thread? Will there be a “starter kit” with the machine? If you could see my “sewing kit” you would faint. It’s smaller than a shoe box, Tupperware (!!!) from who knows when (1970s or 80s?) – my mom gave it to me as a basic… do sewing machines use the same thread that I have to sew buttons on?

        Thank you so much,
        Lynn

        1. Dear Lyn,

I’m glad I made your day!

I’m not sure if there’s a sewing kit included but there must be.

Most sewing machines come with a sewing kit. Please, ask a person in charge at Walmart before you make your purchase.

I won’t faint if I see your sewing kit because I also had a tiny one back in the days when I was little. It was a self-made sewing kit with only basic tools.

However, don’t worry. I’m sure that there’s a sewing kit included with the machine. If there isn’t, contact me again and I will suggest a few kits you can choose from.

Have a nice day and happy sewing!

          Love, Mary.

  6. Dear Mary,

Thank you so much for this wonderful information. It helped me so much for making a decision on my first purchase. I am a beginner and planning on hemming and making clothes for my kids, including jeans. Is the Brother CS6000i a good choice?

    Thank you again,
    Eden

    1. Dear Eden,

Thank you for your comment and kind words.

The Brother CS6000i is perfect for beginners. It’s versatile, loaded with features and easy to use. Also, it is covered by a 25-year limited warranty.

You can use it for making clothes, including jeans. Please, read my detailed review of this legendary unit if you want to learn more about it before buying it.

Hopefully, my answer can help you determine if this machine is the right one for you or not. Feel free to contact me if you need more help with your decision.

      Have a wonderful day.

  7. Hi Mary Jane,

I am a general aviation aircraft mechanic in search of a starter sewing machine. After reading your blog I thought the Singer 4423 would work best. I would like to practice re-upholstering a few old aircraft seats in the hanger. Can you recommend a starter sewing machine for working with material like leather or multi layer fabric and foam? I’m guessing some needles and thread types won’t work and I have read that a “walker” accessory is a must.

    Thanks for your input, Shane.

    1. Dear Shane,

      Thank you for your comment.

Yes, Singer 4423 is a heavy-duty sewing machine that will perfectly meet your needs.

However, the Brother CS6000i Sewing and Quilting Machine is also perfect for beginners who want a unit that is advanced but easy to use.

Both models can sew foam, leather and multi-layer fabric. And yes, you have read right. A walking foot is a must and you should use the right threads and needles for heavy-duty projects.

Hopefully, the links I inserted in my reply can help you find everything you need.

  8. Hello!!! Great article, thank you! I was considering the Brother CS6000i for my 17yo daughter, but I see there is a newer version (CS7000i). Do you think the newer version would be just as good if not better? Or should I stick with the recommended CS6000i?

    Jennifer

    1. Mary Janes and Galoshes

      Dear Jennifer,

Thank you for your comment and kind words.

The CS6000i is quite popular in the USA. It was a runaway hit ever since it was released on the market.

You can almost give it a ‘legend’ status today. It is most popular among beginners because of the stitch quality, features, usability, and affordability. However, Brother released a recent upgrade. It is CS7000i.

When comparing the two machines, you will notice that they are very similar. They are computerized sewing and quilting machines. Their size and body are identical. However, the new machine has a light blue color compared to the navy blue of the old one. So, it is a little more decorative and “prettier”.

In terms of differences, the upgraded version has 70 stitches and one presser foot, a 1/4’’ piecing foot which is used to quilt ideal 1/4’’ seams. In my opinion, these features do not make CS7000i better than the legendary CS6000i.

But if you still want to give it a shot or read customer reviews at Amazon, please follow this link.

Hopefully, my honest thoughts will help you choose what is best for you and your daughter.

Have a lovely and creative day!
      Love, Mary.

      1. Mary,

Thank you so much for your help!!! I decided to go with the “legendary” CS6000i. I ordered it yesterday as a Christmas gift for my daughter and I’m excited to see all the lovely things she’ll make with it. I know she’ll be excited too!!! Thank you again for your honest, expert opinion.

        Have a wonderful day!
        Jennifer

  9. Hello !!
I thoroughly enjoy reading your article. I am planning to buy a beginner model and your detailed review helped me get a clearer picture as to what I should buy. I have little experience in stitching, and I need to buy a machine that can perform basic stitching (not anything fancy), maybe a few pinch pleat curtains and some basic DIY home decor projects. I was getting inclined towards Brother CS6000i, will that be good considering my requirements ?

    1. Mary Janes and Galoshes

Dear MeA, thank you for your comment and for your interest in hearing my opinion.

Yes, Brother CS6000i is a great machine for beginners. You will be making an excellent choice. It is also one of the most popular, high-quality sewing machines by this brand. I cannot wait to see some of your creations in the comments in the future. Feel free to make your purchase and have a nice, creative day!

      Love, Mary.
