Hi Mary
I have a Janome 740DC which was recommended for me as a beginner. Can I do shirring with this machine?
Thanks, Lorraine
Mary Janes and Galoshes
Dear Lorraine,
Thank you for your comment.
The 740DC is super easy to use. Meaning, it’s suitable for beginners. It’s not loaded with a lot of features. However, it has all you need to complete basic sewing projects.
And yes, you can do shirring with this sewing machine. Please, watch this video on how to shirr fabric. Also, learn how to shirr fabric with elastic thread. Hope this helps!
Have a wonderful day and stay safe.
Love, Mary.
Jo
Bought a Janome Graceful Gray beginner machine for my daughter a month or so ago. It lasted, in total, about 2 weeks. There are numerous reviews with the bobbin holder breaking. In our case, the needle will no longer pick up the bobbin thread. We are not newbie sewers and know how to thread the machine properly, replace the needle, etc. In the end, the machine isn’t worth the cost to repair it. I would strongly recommend avoiding that machine at all costs.
Mary Janes and Galoshes
Dear Jo,
Thank you for your comment.
Janome Graceful Gray is a great starter machine for beginners and children. I’m sorry that you have had such a bad experience with this model. It usually performs well for a long time.
Again, thank you for your warning. I’m sure that someone will find your comment helpful and look twice at this sewing machine and the problems that they may experience in the future.
Have a wonderful day and stay safe.
Love, Mary.

Thanks for this review! I need to upgrade, and have sort of settled on Janome. But, I am still unsure on which one to get. It seems the Mod line would be best for me (I want to do crafty things, some applique, but I also want to sew some thicker fabrics, for example, outdoor furniture cushions.). The Mod-19 seems ok, but many of the reviews say it is not for thicker materials. So…would I want the Mod-30, or 50 instead? Any thoughts you have would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Cynthia
Mary Janes and Galoshes
Dear Cynthia,
Thank you for your comment.
They’re similar. However, I would call Mod-30 light-duty because it’s mostly plastic and may not hold up to difficult tasks such as sewing multiple layers of thick denim or things like suede.
Therefore, I would recommend Mod-50 for heavy-duty projects. It works great with heavy fabrics. Hope this helps! Have a lovely day.
Love, Mary.
Ah Hamilton
how does the Skyline series compare to ones you have reviewed?
Mary Janes and Galoshes
Dear Ah Hamilton,
Thank you for your comment.
They provide additional features, stitches, and extras. Also, they’re specially made for specific tasks and include wifi plus useful apps for your sewing. Check Janome’s page for more detail.
Have a wonderful day and stay safe.
Love, Mary.

Mary what is your opinion of the Janome Skyline S9? I just brought it home and treated myself hoping it would be a fun toy. I upgraded from a 14 year old Babylock Ellure. I’m excited to unbox it and play with it this weekend!
Mary Janes and Galoshes
Dear Melanie,
Congrats on your new toy!
Skyline S9 is one of my favorite models by Janome. I will review it soon! It comes with all you need to get sewing or embroidering. It’s perfect for different projects.
Switching to embroidery is a breeze. Attaching the unit is easy and doesn’t take up a lot of space. But it’s the Wi-Fi capability that makes this machine unique. It provides greater freedom.
You can easily download embroidery designs from your computer or iPad and transfer it straight to your Janome. You will also love the automatic features such as the automatic thread cutter.
Overall, it’s a great versatile machine. The only thing that may annoy you is the bobbin thread sensor. It goes off when there’s still a decent amount of thread left on the bobbin.
I wish you luck and beautiful moments with your new best friend. Feel free to share your experiences or photos of your first projects in the comments! Happy sewing!
Have a wonderful day and stay safe.

I can’t find any reviews for the janome skyline 6. Is it a dud? Would anyone reccomend it?
Mary Janes and Galoshes
Dear Amy,
Thank you for your comment.
I haven’t used Skyline s6 personally. However, it’s not a dud. It’s just less popular than the other models in the line. Thank you for reminding me of this line of Janome sewing machines.
I will soon review them all. Until then, you can check this review. And this one which describes Skyline s6 in detail. I wasn’t able to find any disadvantages.
Have a wonderful day and stay safe.

Thank you for your website!
Trying to research and compare the Janome models is mind boggling.
Is there anywhere that helps to compare
types: mechanical vs computer
Lines: magnolia vs mod vs HD etc
Models: is there logic to the model#s? Eg JW8100 vs 7330 vs C30
Features comparison?
It would be nice if Janome website worked like car websites….
Mary Janes and Galoshes
Dear Audrey,
Thank you for your comment and kind words!
The Magnolia line was invented with beginners and seasoned hobbyists in mind, while the Mod line was focused on intermediate sewers and fashion enthusiasts. The HD line was developed for advanced users and professionals.
The JW8100 model you have mentioned features cutting-edge technology to make sewing a lot easier.
It’s loaded with a built-in needle threader, 28 stitches for home decor, 27 heirloom stitches, 7 automatic buttonholes, 20 stitches for basic and fashion sewing, 18 stitches for quilting.
You will get 22 regular accessories including extension table and 1/4 inch foot. There’s also a backlit LCD screen and free arm. It’s the perfect machine for quilters.
The 7330, on the other hand, is ideal for passionate crafters and enthusiastic beginners. It’s loaded with a lot of features including 30 stitches and 6 1-step buttonholes.
You will get snap-on presser feet, a built-in needle threader, memorized needle up/down, superior feed system, 7-piece feed dog, free arm, speed control slider, etc.
There’s also a drop feed, a locking stitch button, an auto-declutch bobbin winder and extra high presser foot lift to help you complete heavy-duty projects with great ease.
The Janome 30C also has 30 built-in stitches and a jam-proof top drop-in bobbin. You will also receive an LCD with easy navigation buttons including a reverse button.
There’s also a needle up/down button. If you’re looking for a portable, decent and feature-rich machine, look no further than 30C. It has a built-in needle threader, an auto declutch bobbin winder, 850 stitches per minute, memory buttonhole, adjustable thread tension, etc.
Writing these short reviews, I realized that the three models you mentioned provide similar features and perform similarly. Each one is a great choice for passionate crafters.
Hopefully, my reply can help you pick the proper sewing machine for you. And yes, you’re right. It would be much easier if Janome’s website worked like car websites!
Have a creative day and stay safe.

Does Janome have a built in walking foot machine?
Mary Janes and Galoshes
Dear Vikki,
Thank you for your comment.
Janome Memory Craft 6600P and Janome Memory Craft 7700QCP have a built-in walking foot called “AccuFeed”. This makes quilting so much easier.
However, because of the crisis, most sewing machines aren’t available for purchase including these two. Hopefully, this will all pass soon and they will be available again.
Please follow my website on updates and have a wonderful day.

please tell me the differences between a 4300QDC and a 4120QDC
most stores seem to sell the 4300 for about $100. more
is it worth the bit extra?
Mary Janes and Galoshes
Dear Sharon,
Thank you for your comment.
The only difference between the 4300QDC and 4120QDC models is the number of stitches. 4120QDC has 120 built-in sewing stitches, while the 4300QDC has 300 built-in sewing stitches.
If you want a variety of stitches, choose the 4300QDC. However, if you do not see this difference as a big advantage, purchase the cheaper model. Here is a comparison chart for more details.
Hopefully, my answer can help you select the right sewing machine for you.
Love, Mary.

Hi!! I’m New in these! But I want to buy something like for new ones, but looking forward for my bussines.
Do you recomend me mechanical o cumputerized??
And wich model??
Thanks
Mary Janes and Galoshes
Dear Hilda,
Thank you for your comment.
I would recommend a computerized model because they’re easier to use. Also, you can watch a lot of YouTube tutorials on how to use a computerized sewing machine. Since you mentioned that you want to open a business, I would suggest the Janome DC5100 sewing machine. It is super powerful with a DC motor, impressive stitch quality, hardcover included, an automatic presser tension and other features.
If you want something that is suitable for beginners but also great for opening a business, I recommend the Janome MOD-19 sewing machine. It is quiet, durable, compact, super-versatile, and easy to use. The Janome Magnolia 7318 is also perfect for beginners. It is affordable, compact, versatile, and easy to use.
Hopefully, my recommendations can help you pick the best sewing machine for you. I wish you the best.
Love, Mary.

Hi Mary,
Thank you for your in-depth reviews! I’m a little confused about all the choices and model numbers of the Janome. I’m currently looking at the MC 9850. I don’t think that I will be a quilter, at least not on a large scale. I can see making table runners, place-mats and pillow covers but that’s about as big as I will go. Do you know if this machine will be good for those types of projects? I’m excited to try out some embroidery as well. I’ve been out of the sewing world for quite some time some I’m amazed and overwhelmed. I’m about to retire and my 30 year old Kenmore has died. I’m ready to get a new machine and have some fun. Is the JEF format a standard format between brands? Thank you for your time!
Mary Janes and Galoshes
Dear Mary,
Thank you for your comment and for asking for my opinion.
The Memory Craft 9850 is a perfect combination of embroidery and sewing with a large sewing space in a small space. No matter if you want to make fashion pieces, home décoration or the finishing of fabrics, it will have your back. It has 1,000 SPM rate and provides precise stitch quality. It is easy to use, meaning it is perfect for newbies. You can also get the Janome Horizon MC 12000 Embroidery & Sewing Machine.
It is also a combination unit with user-friendly software, 338 built-in embroidery designs and 425 built-in stitches. It is perfect for both sewing and embroidery. However, it is your choice after all. About the JEF format, yes, it is a standard format between brands. I hope that this will help you pick the right machine.
Have a nice day.
Love, Mary.

I have been sewing for a long time using my Bernina 1000. Today I am looking for a machine with bells and whistles to have fun with in retirement. Janome has so many to offer, and I am debating between the mc12000 and the 15000 model. Which do you prefer?
Mary Janes and Galoshes
Dear Suzan,
Thank you for your comment and for asking for my opinion.
Both Bernina and Janome have decent, high-quality and modern sewing machines. And I understand if you want to make a switch.
The Janome models that you have chosen have a good reputation so far but I prefer the Memory Craft Horizon MC12000 Professional Embroidery, Sewing and Quilting Machine.
It is the perfect combination machine which makes every project more enjoyable and has a great price.
Also, it is super easy to use and has powerful features. If you want to expand your horizons, this is the ideal machine for you.
If you want something more expensive, I suggest that you buy the 15000. It has a lot of new, advanced features and a more powerful performance. Also, it is the first machine with built-in WLAN connectivity.
Happy sewing.
Love, Mary.

I want to buy a Janome MC 6700p or the MC 6650. Can you give me any advise as to which one is the better. I like to make appliqué quilts and other quilts also.
Mary Janes and Galoshes
Dear Karen,
Thank you for your comment and for asking for my opinion.
I believe the 6700 is equipped with more accessories and has a more powerful motor. But the 6650 still has a pop out plate, 9 mm stitch width, variable needle positions, up/down needle, start-stop, wide 10″ harp, mostly metal exterior, superior feed-system (vs accufeed on 6700) and lots of decorative stitches.
As you can see, both machines have their pros and cons. However, the main difference is in the number of stitches. Hopefully, this short comparison will help you choose the right Janome model for you. I wish you a nice and creative day.
Love, Mary.

If you are a quilter, I highly recommend the Janome 7700. It has a very wide opening to accommodate you quilt as you quilt it and sews and quilts like a dream! I have had mine for over four years and have never had a moments trouble with it.
Mary Janes and Galoshes
It is my sincere pleasure to receive comments like yours, Jenna! I want to thank you for all the significant shares about your Janome 7700. I hope you’ll get yourself more creative and enjoy for years to come with your machine. All the best to you and your family! Mary.
