Brother 1034D Serger
(Best For Beginners)
Brother 1034D surely is four-threaded machine which you will rebuild into 3-threaded. With features which are easy to manage and customizable options, this works like charm.
However, making full adjustments is the task you will complete just in a second. This is the best serger for beginner.
Addition of clips or levers for the threading is an incredible bonus. And so can be the controllers with regard to disk tension. However, do you realize what matters even more here?
You can do the work with the elastic in smoothest manner! Owing to machine’s pressure regulator and differential feed.
Based on material you are working with, here you are free to create "seam width" adjustments. In addition to only after placing it to test I realized how useful its unit’s "conveyor-combs" are. Usually, they make space for stretching or compressing the fabric during sewing.
Having 1,300 SPM speed and overlock/coverstitch functionality, it is hard to defeat Brother 1034D. Especially in creating truly professional, steady stitch quality!
I came across many brother serger reviews. Many people say many things about brother serger. However, my goal is being completely straightforward with you.
Comparatively speaking, the Brother 1034D "3 to 4" Thread Serger works better than the other sergers. In terms of coverstitch function! Yet as the standalone model, this will fall short in same department.
Everything is great about this serger but there’s one thing which I don’t like and it is the capabilities of coverstitch. To me, it seems a little disappointing. I would love getting a high-performing one.
Thus here’s my suggestion to you. Well, if you are sewing for selling, you will be best using one more serger having coverstich.
Pros
- Easy to use and thread.
- Detachable “free-arm” included.
- Foot pedal here is quite responsive.

- Vibrations at higher speed endanger stability.
Verdict:
You ought to consider buying the Brother 1034D Serger when you need access to a lot more superior features.
When compared with other sergers, the one here is a bit taller and even that makes the threading a lot easier.
Thus if you are a regular sewer, your decision to improve to something similar to this appears appropriate. I have included this product in this review post because of its excellent features and performance.

Serger Brands
Every popular brand on the market including Janome, Brother, Singer, Juki, and so on have their serger machine. So, if you want to review their best sergers in detail, check my comparison chart down below. And do not forget to read my detailed serger reviews of every product right after the comparison chart.
What Serger Machine To Buy And Why?
If this is your first time buying a serger, you probably do not know what features to look after. However, do not worry because I have your back. Just keep these next important features that make a good serger in mind and choose accordingly.
Simplicity
As a beginner, you should search for something that is simple to set up and easy to use. If you purchase a serger machine that is too complicated to use, it may discourage you and make you lose interest in the craft. If you buy a simpler serger that will make you enjoy decorating your crafts, your skills will improve.
Price tag
If you are new to the craft, I suggest that you buy something cheaper. Although most sergers come at a higher price than regular sewing machines, you can find something at a decent price in my comparison chart. However, keep in mind that cheaper sergers may not provide the same results as expensive ones.
Fabric feed
Trying out ruffles and twists to your creations can boost your interest in the craft. However, in order to enjoy this, you need a good serger machine with a different fabric feed. It allows you to experiment or create stylish edges with different materials. If you want a straight edge only, buy a standard machine.
Accessories
Pay attention to the extra accessories you get with the machine you buy. As a newbie, you can find them helpful. Also, you can save cash on buying them if you need them in the future. Free accessories provide the freedom to experiment with exciting things that will keep you interested in learning the practice.
If you plan to invest in a high-end serger machine, ensure that your new toy can help you create a cover stitch. You need these stitches for making seams and cuffs. Also, they allow garments to stretch out and adjust to the wearer. A double needle sewing machine can provide the same results. However, they are not as flexible as they would turn out if they were made with some of the best serger sewing machines.
Which Serger Machine Is The Best?
It depends on what you are looking for and what you want to accomplish with your Serger machine. Do you want a basic but strong seam? If yes, then a 2/4 or 3/4 can help you realize most of your wishes and needs. It will also save you money in the process. But if you want versatility, buy a 2/3/4 serger machine.
I personally recommend that you invest in a high-end model with a firm differential feed. It will help you add a personal touch to every project. However, how can you defer a good from a bad differential feed?
Well, check my serger machine reviews or my comparison chart for best serger 2021 if you want to learn which one is the best serger with strong differential feed. And pay attention to additional features like a color-coding to prevent damage when threading it. These types of injuries are not covered by warranty.
Also, pay attention to the type of hems – rolled up hems are ideal on a serger. However, perfectly flat seams can be hard, especially on stubborn fabrics and materials. Now, let’s learn how to clean a serger.
How To Clean A Serger Machine?
Just like any regular sewing machine, a serger needs proper cleaning and oiling on a regular basis. If this is your first time using a serger, you will learn that a serger makes more lint than a regular machine since with every stitch is followed by cutting. So, you need to clean your overlocker after every sewing project.
Purchase a pack of microfiber cloths and clean your serger regularly. If you have never cleaned a serger before, follow my steps and you will do just fine. A quick tip: do not use canned air under any condition.
Step 1: Remove the stitch plate
You do not need to do this regularly. However, it is recommended to remove and clean the stitch plate every 3 months. This provides access to cleaning around the feed dogs. The serger machines come with a screwdriver for this purpose. Do not worry – after the first time, removing the plate will become much easier. Clean the stitch plate with a microfiber cloth. After, use a lint brush for the feed dogs.
Step 2: Clean the cutting knife
Lower the cutting knife to gain better access to clean it properly. Lint builds up between the lower and upper blades – a spot that handles most of the action. On most sergers, lowering the knife can be done by opening the sewing table. Locate the knife activation knob and press it in. Turn clockwise to lower it.
Step 3: Change the needles
With some models, you can use standard household needles just like the ones you use with your regular sewing machine. The type and size of the needle are determined by the project. The smallest size needle you can use in a serger is 70. Anything smaller can easily break due to the speed of the sewing machine.
The largest size needle you can use in a serger is 90. Anything bigger could cause a bent needle or a bent looper. I use universal 80/12 needles for most of my projects. Needles can last very long in a serger. But I change mine every second month. Needless to say that damaged ones should be changed immediately.
How To Fix A Serger Machine?
I suggest that you leave serious issues like skipping stitches, breaking needles or damaged blade to pros.
Replacing a cutting knife can be very expensive, so make sure to keep those pins that are easy to sheer off to a minimum. I recommend using clover wonder clips – they are much easier to see and will not end up in the knife. Take your serger to a certified dealership once a year for cleaning, oiling, and adjusting.
A professional can clean the inside of your machine better than you can. If you take care of your serger (cleaning and oiling) properly and regularly, you will experience many happy hours of sewing together.
How To Thread Serger Machine?
Every serger should be turned off when threading it. After, determine the right threading color. Most models use four spools of thread, two for looping beneath the needles and two to use in the needles.
The serger you own will show you the order in which you thread them. Just take a look at the threading diagram on your model. The 3-thread sergers have a lower looper, an upper looper, and a single needle thread. Put a spool of thread on the upper looper. Thread it. Pull the thread up – just below the needles.
Remove the faceplate on the serge’s front and pull the thread through the metal loops. Most machines come with a color-coded guide in order to help you thread the upper looper with ease. Next, thread the lower looper. Place the spool on the second spindle and bring the thread over the front of the machine.
You can use tweezers in order to get the thread through the tiny loops. Thread the needles. Set them on the spindle and bring them over to the front. Place the thread through the needle(s) on the overlocker.
How To Use A Serger Machine?
If you do not know how to use a serger sewing machine, just follow these steps and you will do just fine.
Step 1: Adjust the tension
To adjust the tension, your machine should be turned on. So, press the power button and adjust it after.
Step 2: What stitch you want to use?
Next, you need to determine what stitch you want to use for your project. You can make a rolled hem or finish raw knit edges and so on. Read your manual to decide the type of stitch you need for your project.
Step 4: Adjust each spool’s tension dial
Once you decide what stitch you need to use for achieving the desired results, you need to adjust each spool’s tension dial. You can find the correct tension for each spool in your manual. Adjust accordingly.
Step 5: Run a test stitch
In order to test, you do not need fabric underneath the needles. Just put your foot on the pedal and let the serger make the looped thread. Inspect it. Does it resemble your idea and look the same as in your manual? Interlocking stitches and loops are supposed to look even without too loose or too even areas.
If you got loose stitches, adjust the tension dials next to each spool of thread to tighten up the thread. If you got bunched up or puckered fabric, you need to loosen the tension on your serger sewing machine.
My best advice for beginners is to practice on a piece of fabric first. Test your serger stitch to prevent mistakes and discourage yourself. Sew test stitches until you get even stitches and feel confident in your skills. Now: let’s learn how to sew with a serger machine. Keep reading, if you are interested in learning.
How To Sew With A Serger Machine?
For finishing seams, you need to lift the presser foot and needles. Turn the needle dial towards you to lift the needles and the presser foot to lift the metal presser foot. After, slide your fabric under the foot and needles. Cut the fabric edge. Did you know that sergers seam and cut the fabric at the same time?
Take a look at the seam allowance numbers to the right of the needle and push the fabric past the blade accordingly. This can go between 1.5 to 2.5 cm depending on what allowance you used when measuring.
Sew and slide fabric underneath the needles. In the meantime, use the foot pedal in order to control the speed. Do not force the fabric and keep it straight. The serger feet can help you push the fabric through. Sew till the end of the seam to make a tail of stitches that you can hide under and hand fix in the spot.
Can Serger Replace Sewing Machine?
Both household and sergers have their benefits and disadvantages. Serger sewing machines can help you add a personal touch to your creations and make durable, professional-looking seams.
However, a serger machine would be totally useless when thinking about adding zippers or making buttonholes.
A regular sewing machine, on the other hand, is excellent for making buttonholes and zippers. However, once you get to the edges, there is no way to create a polished edge without an overlocker.
Also, sergers work great with knitted or stretchy fabrics unlike regular machines (unless you get a heavy duty model).
Can sergers replace regular machines? Unfortunately, no. But, normal machines cannot replace sergers either. So, the best solution is to get them both. If sewing is your hobby, I suggest that you buy a regular sewing machine. However, if you want to open a home-based business, invest in a good serger machine.
When To Use A Serger Sewing Machine?
As I mentioned a couple of times by now, sergers can be used when you want to give garments or other sewing objects finished seams. Using a serger has many benefits. And one of them is creating secure and professional-looking seams. Meaning, you can use a serger if you want to add longevity to your creation.
Also, overlockers cut excess fabric and cover raw edges which automatically gives your piece a polished look. Sergers are perfect to use on knit fabrics since they have built-in stretch. However, to get the best results, you need to thread your serger properly. Otherwise, you will not get the desired ending results.
Brother Serger 1634d vs 1034D: Which One Is Better?
No matter if you are looking for the best serger sewing machine for swimwear or want a serger machine for jeans, the 1634d and 1034d by Brother are two of the machines you should definitely consider. Most people would pick 1034d because of the proved excellent performance and the number of online sales.
However, 1634 has advantages as well. However, which one is better? Well, depending on what you are looking for and what do you plan to do with your model. Review the differences and decide for yourself.
Automatic threading
Sorry to disappoint, but both cannot thread automatically. If you are a newbie, you must see manual threading as a struggle. And you are absolutely right – it is an absolute nightmare. But having the chance to thread manually can sharpen your skills because threading demands different threading techniques.
However, once you learn how to do it, you will never forget how it is done. The 1034D has a lay-in color-coded threading system along with a guide on how to do it properly. It will teach you how and where to thread the four threads. Each thread is coded with different colors which makes the undertaking easier.
Keep in mind that the third and fourth threads ask for more effort and attention. 1634D comes with an integrated guide as well. However, it is NOT as convenient to use as 1034D when it comes to threading.
Stitch finger
A stitch finger is a part of stitch creating responsible for operating with threads, needles and pressure foot. The pressure foot can be found on top of the needle plate made to keep the material smooth. The stitch finger is located to the right side of the pressure foot, acting as a guide in order to make a stitch.
Keep in mind that the stitch finger is located close to the cutting blade. Meaning, it is a dangerous part for your fingers when the serger is in operation. So, you need to be very careful when working. I suggest that you read the user manual before you challenge the stitch finger or try to resolve a potential issue.
Brother 1634D has 2 stitch fingers while Brother 1034D has only one. Still, both have removable fingers. Apart from this feature, the machines are identical. Each one has a differential feed which is incredible.
They both come with a 25-year limited warranty just like most machines by Brother and provide quality results. They both create a rolled hem and narrow hem. And they both offer the possibility of purchasing presser feet separately. They are both super fast (1,300 stitches per minute), durable and very powerful.
You cannot go wrong no matter which one you choose. If you are a beginner, I personally recommend Brother 1034D since it is easy to use. If you are an advanced user, the Brother 1634D is perfect for you.
Brother DZ1234 vs Brother 1034D: Which One Is Better?
If you are new to the sewing world, you probably do not know that Brother 1034D is one of the greatest sergers on the market. You can read my complete review on this serger in the serger reviews below. But for now, let’s compare this model to another great serger that has also taken over the market – DZ1234.
As you can notice by the name of the serger, it is a 1/2/3/4 thread quality serger that will help you make the ideal seams. However, why pick this model over 1034D? Let’s find out the major feature differences.
According to my research, there is only one difference between these models. And it is not a feature one but associated with the accessory package. If you buy DZ1234, you will get a blind hem stitch foot, 2 sets of starter thread, piping foot and gathering foot. The 1034D does not bring thread sets and piping foot.
If you do not know which one to pick, compare the cost that you will have to pay for the accessories that 1034D does not include in the purchase. After, decide which model offers the best value for the money.
Janome vs Brother Serger
For the newbies who do not know anything about sewing brands, Janome and Brother are two popular brands you can completely trust. They never fail in performance or durability. And they also have prices for everyone’s budget. However, if you want to buy a serger machine from these brands, keep reading.
When compared to Brother, Janome has more expensive sewing machines. Brother, on the other hand, provides cheap but feature-rich sewing machines. So, if you want to purchase a decent Brother machine, be prepared to pay around $150, unlike a standard Janome sewing machine that will cost you over $250.
Brother has better-computerized sewing machine while Janome has uncomparable mechanical models. Janome offers excellent computerized sewing machines as well, however, with less built-in stitches than a Brother machine which usually comes with no less than 100. Sometimes, you get 180 or much more.
You might be wondering: what about sergers? Well, both brands produce high-quality durable sergers. But keep in mind that Janome always takes the extra mile to produce a durable frame and add as many metal parts as possible. If you want a heavier, durable model, Janome is where you should buy from.
If you want something cheaper but more feature-rich, buy from Brother. Nonetheless, both offer quality sewing machines including some of the best sergers for you can review in the comparison chart below.
Serger Machine vs Sewing Machine
Many people, especially beginners wonder what is the difference between a serger and sewing machine. I will answer your question and point out the most important differences you need to know. So, read on.
- A serger is a customized sewing machine which most people like to consider as “overlock”. It is a professional sewing machine unlike household sewing machines made for basic sewing projects.
- The seam that you can create with a serger machine will appear more professional and durable, unlike the one that you can make with a household sewing machine because a serger can take 3 to 8 thread cons together, unlike a basic model. A serger sewing machine also prevents fraying.
- A normal sewing machine can utilize one thread only. It might allow you to utilize two but only if you use a double needle. Serger machines cut + seam at the same time which is pretty amazing.
- Apparently, serger machines are a lot faster than regular sewing machines. You can notice in my comparison chart that most of the sergers I reviewed provide a maximum speed of 1,300 SPM.
When To Utilize A Sewing Machine Vs Serger?
It goes devoid of saying that the serger has a lot of strengths, however, it is far from "stand-alone" machine and even it includes its shortcomings. Additionally, that is where typical sewing machine stands out. So, let us see when it is okay to utilize a serger as well as when you will have to depend on your fundamental sewing machine.
Well, firstly, if you are not going to make living from this, then there is a good opportunity you can accomplish everything without serger. The sewing machine can permit you to make the sketches turn on.
And, rather than a serger, this will enable you to accomplish zippers, buttonholes, facings, and topstitching. All these are a few of areas where the serger will not be capable of helping you out.
However, if you would like more neat and professional look that is something you cannot have with the sewing machine merely. Without serger, you won’t have any finished edges that are needed for more expert-looking projects.
As a result, if you are a beginner in seamstress world, then I recommend knowing the sewing machine well initially. As you develop and advance, here you can consider adding a top-quality serger just to the lineup. It will certainly make you do the work easier and faster, as well.
Serger Or Sewing Machine - Which One Is Considerably Better?
Well, you will probably guess its answer here. Both of them have a lot of shortcomings and benefits, likewise. While serger can assist you to work quicker and make much more professional-looking and durable seams, this will be totally useless when thinking about adding zippers as well as making the buttonholes.
In contrast, the sewing machine can excel at creating zippers and buttonholes but it may fail you as soon as you arrive just to edges. There is no way for creating a more polished edge without serger.
Also, when it concerns certain types of fabric, like stretchy and knitted, a serger can be handy. The sergers do the work in a spectacular technique when it concerns seaming conveniently stretchable materials devoid of stretching them just in weird approaches.
So, the ideal answer will be to get them both. Basically, that’s the best solution. My suggestion is to stay with the standard sewing machine when you are doing this just as hobby. The sergers are very expensive. Well, if you are not intending to go pro, you can do just excellent with a standard sewing machine.
Things To Consider
Consider these questions before you begin looking for right "serger" sewing machine. The answers to these questions can help you figure out the type of the serger you require and also what will fulfill your projects and preferences properly.
Do You Even Sew?
These types of specialized machines tend to be typically used along with a normal sewing machine. Sergers will do very much yet what they cannot do is baste, install zippers, embroider, make buttonholes, or sew "in reverse".
Well, you cannot use serger for your sewing requirements so do not get one for replacing a typical sewing machine otherwise you'll be frustrated. This short video will help you learn more about using a serger effectively.
Coverstitching
Okay, if you would like to be capable of cover stitching then you will require a minimum of five threads. Serger must clearly indicate that it’ll coverstitch.
You will find coverstitch machines out there but they're not able to trim the fabric thus you get the serged edge.
Space Available
Well, if you're on limited price range or have restricted extra space for buying several machines; a single for cover stitching then a single for serging isn't usually practical.
Though moving from the one function to other will be a bit difficult, purchasing serger "sewing machine" with cover stitching capacity is an excellent way for saving money and also space.
Frequency Of Usage:
If you would be serging on the light fabric then you will do fine on less expensive, standard serger. If perhaps you make "jeans" or do additional challenging sewing jobs just on regular basis then you will need to get best serger that you can pay for.
Threading The "Serger"
If you've problems with the dexterity or you've bad eyesight then you might have much trouble with the sewing tasks including threading your serger.
You can find automatic threading sergers which will implement all threading work so you do not have to be frustrated with threading process.
Finishing Edges
Well, if all that you will do is the finishing edges after that you'll only need most common serger with overclock capability.
Here, overlock function needs only 2 to 3 to 4 "thread capacity". A few sergers tend to be 3 to 4 threads sergers which imply that they will only sew the stuffs with 3-4 threads.
How To Pick Serger Machine?
A highly-ranked brand available doesn't assure you that it's the greatest option for you. You can find expensive machines which sometimes do not meet their promises.
You must weigh things appropriately and be sensible in making final decision. Think about the following aspects when selecting these machines on the market.
- Budget
When buying serger machines intended for sewing, the cost or price of the product is a significant consideration to consider. When you purchase a serger, ensure it matches the budget.
Nevertheless, if the cost is right as well as the machine includes the features that you need, then it's never bad to make investments in an excellent serger machine.
For finding a reliable and affordable brand, it will be very best to assess many serger reviews that you will find online.
- Attachments
While you purchase serger machines, then ask if perhaps the product will be offered with attachments or upgrades.
You must determine if you will find added accessories or features that go along with the product. No matter what attachment there will be, it must match the user’s particular needs.
- Differential Feed
To get a more expert quality result, pick a machine having differential feed. This allows the users to do the work with light or silky fabrics.
One more thing is, here you must check if that machine is capable of handling heavyweight fabrics. In terms of working on the heavy fabrics, the differential feed will assist stitch stretch.
- Stitches Number
Ahead of making a purchase, ensure you're aware of the number of stitches that the serger machine offers.
It's important to think about this particular attribute and buy the machine with many stitches. An excellent option is that the serger machine is capable of managing curved stitches.
- Threads Number
Generally, these machines possess 4-number of the threads. These are most common option among users. Conversely, there are restricted machines that just feature 2 or 3 threads.
Almost all simple sewing jobs can be accomplished with the usage of 2 to 4 "thread machine".
