The Top Features of The Singer 9985
This machine has so many features that it’s almost impossible to list and explain them all – so I’ll highlight the most important ones and give you a quick explanation of what they are.
960 Built-in Stitches
This machine has a whopping 960 built-in stitches – more than most other sewing machines can dream of. This includes 919 decorative stitches as well as 10 essential stitches, 21 stretch stitch, 6 alphabet styles, and 13 one-step buttonholes.
If you think that’s too hard to remember, don’t worry – a reference chart is included.
6 Alphabet and Numeral Styles
If you’re into monogramming, you’re going to love the fact that this machine includes 6 different alphabet and numeral styles. This also includes one Cyrillic style, which is rare and incredibly helpful, and there’s also a memory function that makes it easier to make the same monogram each time.
Mirror Imaging and Stitch Elongation
This is a unique feature which allows you to mirror any stitch you might want to make and elongate them from two up to five times. When used with the built-in stitches, this gives you an amazing amount of variety.
Automatic Needle Threader
With the automatic threader, you can thread a needle in six seconds flat, and it’s super easy. You can find detailed instructions on how to do it on the sewing machine itself.
Large LCD Color Touch Screen
All of the options that this sewing machine has can be found through the large LCD touch screen and in color, allowing you to pick your stitches, preview them, set thread tension, the length and width of the stitch and it even recommends the sewing foot you should use.
13 Sewing Feet Included
You get a total of 13 sewing feet bundled in with this machine, giving you lots of variety.
There’s an all-purpose foot, of course, but besides that there’s also a zipper foot, a blind hem foot, a buttonhole foot (including an exclusive underplate), a satin stitch foot, a narrow rolled hem foot, a blind hem foot, an overcasting foot, a darning/embroidery foot, a button sewing foot, an open toe foot, a quarter inch foot, a cording foot and an even feed/walking foot.
That’s quite a bit more than you get with most sewing machines and provides you with a ton of options.
A Huge Range of Accessories
Besides just the sewing feet, this machine comes with a lot of other accessories included as well – and they’re all quite good.
You get needles, class 15 bobbins, a lint brush, a seam ripper, an auxiliary spool pin, spool pin felt and spool caps. There’re also screwdrivers, a soft-sided dust cover, and an edge/quilting bar.
The Remaining Features of the Singer 9985
While these are the most important features that the Singer 9985 sewing machine has to offer, they’re far from the only ones. Here’s everything else it has to offer:
- 25 needle positions
- 7-segment feeding system
- 2 LED lights for the work area
- Automatic locking stitch function
- Presser control
- Foot controller
- Automatic reverse stitch
- Automatic bobbin winding clutch

My Full, Unbiased Singer 9985 Review
The promise of 960 built-in stitches seems great, but it got me thinking – how much of those stitches will be useful? How many of them will I ever use?
Well, I’m glad to report that I used almost all of them at least once and they all seemed to perform well. All the basics are covered, and most of the decorative stitches are different enough from each other, though there are definitely some that seem too similar.
The automatic buttonholes, on the other hand, are all wildly different and incredibly useful, as are the stretch stitches.
The alphabets for monogramming are also amazingly useful, and I’m glad that a Cyrillic option was included too.
All of the options are usually easy to find on the touchscreen, though you do have to scroll through a lot of screens to get to some of the things you want.
The included options for changing the stitch length and mirroring them are also useful and allow you to get a lot more use out of certain stitches.
However, the thing that helped me the most were the sewing feet – they allowed me to do things I didn’t think were possible.
I also liked that the machine suggested specific sewing feet for certain stitches where I thought I didn’t have to change them.
The machine is not just made for delicate, specialized sewing though – it’s definitely a heavy-duty sewing machine, and it has a lot of power. The speed is great, too – 850 stitches per minute.
There’s no skipping at all due to the sturdy metal frame, and the construction overall is great, and the machine is sure to last for years.
It does make a lot of noise while working and it will vibrate a lot and ‘walk’ if you don’t stabilize it well.
Besides that, it’s rather easy to use, and all of the little quality-of-life features are definitely appreciated and work well.
The 2 LED lights for lighting up the work area eliminate all shadows while the automatic reverse lever allows you to easily reinforce stitches. You can also automatically wind the bobbin and choose from 25 different needle positions.
The only thing that doesn’t work quite as intended is the needle threader – and yes, I followed the instructions carefully.
Overall, I’d say this is an amazing machine in almost every regard, and it’s tailor-made for professionals looking for a reliable and versatile workhorse that will last for years to come.
The Pros and Cons of The Singer 9985 Sewing Machine
Here’s most of what I think is good and bad about the Singer 9985 organized into a nice list, to sum everything up:
- Comes with 13 sewing feet
- Solid and durable construction
- Lots of built-in stitches
- Easy to use
- Versatile and highly adjustable
- Comes with a lot of good accessories
- Good for monogramming
- The price is high
- The threader doesn’t always thread the needle properly
- It makes a lot of noise
There’s nothing more I can say about this machine that I haven’t said already. So, what’s my ultimate conclusion?
Well, I’d say that this machine, while expensive, justifies its value twice over. It just has so many useful features, and it’s incredibly versatile. It seems like there’s almost nothing this machine can’t do.
The number of built-in stitches is huge, and if that isn’t enough, the number of modifications you can apply to them is ridiculous.
It’s a good, durable, strong machine that can do pretty much everything you can imagine and it’s a great choice for pros looking for a machine that they’ll use for years to come. It’s one of the best sewing machines out there.
