This guide will teach you everything you need to know about Rowenta irons and help you pick the best Rowenta iron that will meet your needs. Let’s jump into my unit reviews and get this adventure started.

Is Rowenta A Good Iron?

Yes, Rowenta makes quality products since forever. That is why they became so popular in the first place and earned customer trust. In case you did not know, Rowenta is a German company for making smaller appliances like irons. They have a wide selection of electrical irons including traditional and travel irons.

They also make products that use less electricity. Therefore, some of their ironing units can be classified as environmentally-friendly. Most Rowenta irons range between 1500 and 1800 Watts and differ by the hole number which delivers the jets of steam offering even distribution into fabrics for ironing wrinkles.

Rowenta irons have a limescale collection and auto shut-off feature. Another advantage of purchasing a Rowenta iron is paying less for a quality unit. Rowenta has different products of all budgets and tastes.

However, this brand is best known for manufacturing technically innovative products for household use.

They provide a combination of durability and great performance with a modern design and affordability. However, some buyers complain about their product leaking so let’s list the possible causes of this issue.

What Causes A Rowenta Iron To Leak Water?

Just like any other brand out there, Rowenta has its pros & cons. One of the biggest downfalls is leaking. However, this does NOT happen because of malfunction. It happens because of reasons like insufficient heat, the wrong type of water that you are using, over-filling the tank and other human-caused reasons.

Insufficient Heat

Many irons have only one heating element – the soleplate and once the water goes from the reservoir to the soleplate, it turns into steam in order to help with your work. But sometimes, the soleplate does not reach enough temperature to transform the water into steam, so it ends up leaking onto your item.

You can solve this problem by allowing your unit to reach temperature in order to deliver great results. Also, most irons function properly only at their highest temperature point. However, if you are working on a cooler setting, you need to turn off the steam completely in order to prevent water leaks & spitting.

You can also try avoiding constant pressure of the steam blast switch. Most irons will require a time of seconds between one round and another. Meaning, constantly pressing the button may cause leaking.

Watch video: How to Use a Rowenta Iron

The Wrong Type of Water

Pay attention to the water that you are using. So, read the instruction manual in order to inform on the type of water that your unit supports. Do not rely on past experience with old irons when using a brand new one. Most think that distilled water will do the job but most Rowenta irons support tap water only.

Instead, they require tap water in order to function properly. If the water in your area is extremely hard you can mix it with distilled water. However, keep in mind that different brands use different design and technology in their irons. Usually, distilled water destroys the inside parts of irons causing them to leak.

Over-Filling

Usually, users do not pay enough attention to the maximum line and overfill their iron. This may cause a unit to leak. However, it may not leak from the soleplate but from the top when held horizontally as well and cause frustration. Some units come with darker tanks so you need to pay attention to prevent leaks.

Things to Consider

When shopping for iron, there are important features that you need to keep in mind to buy a unit that will meet your ironing needs. The following are important things you must remember when shopping.

Safety Feature

I know that some of you do not like auto shut-off feature in irons. However, it is necessary to buy a unit with basic safety features to prevent fire. Often Rowenta irons have a regular 8 minutes shut-off feature when left in a straight position, 30 seconds in a horizontal position & 30 seconds when left on their side.

Temperature Settings

Another important feature you need to consider is temperature. Some units have an ergonomic design for allowing the person choose between low, high and maximum temperature by simply spinning a knob while other ironing units require of you to choose a clothing type like silk, wool, cotton, linen and so on.

If you are a professional, pick a unit with a precise temperature reading. However, if you want to buy a product for household use, get something with simple settings. Yes, different temperature settings are preferable but they are not necessary. Keep in mind that this feature goes in hand with the power scale.

Soleplate and Hole Count

The soleplate material and hole count matters too. Therefore, remember that the more holes, the more even steam distribution, and greater steam circulation. As for the soleplate, it is important to remember that most top-quality ironing units come with a stainless steel soleplate for easier gliding over garments.

Water Capacity

This depends on the type of iron you buy. Usually, most irons on the market have tanks with 12 ounces of water capacity. This delivers 30 minutes of consistent steam. However, if you are a devoted user who is annoyed by frequent refills, choose a unit with greater water capacity which delivers longer consistent steam. For example, units with 47 ounces tank capacity deliver at least 2 hours of continuous steaming.

Portability

If you plan to use your iron occasionally, portability is not that important for you. However, if you are a frequent user who plans to use it for many hours on a daily basis, then holding a heavy unit can hurt you over time. That is why you need to pay attention to weight and buy something that is 5 pounds or less.

Best Way To Clean Rowenta Iron

If you are not a neat freak like me, ironing is probably not your favorite choir around the home. But it can get worse if you do not keep your iron clean.

I have said this in previous articles. But I will say it again.

Proper maintenance is key to long-lasting units and stress-free experience. However, how to clean your ironing unit properly & keep it well-maintained?

Let’s find out how to unclog your ironing unit and clean your soleplate properly.

Unclogging Iron

If your iron is clogged, you will need distilled white vinegar & distilled water. Otherwise, a clogged iron will leave rusty water spots on your clothes. If you think about purchasing commercial cleaning products for cleaning your iron, read your warranty first. Make sure that using them does not void your warranty.

However, I recommend that you use distilled white vinegar since it is cheap & gentle. If you decide to take my advice, mix ½ cup of distilled water with ½ distilled white vinegar and pour the solution into an unplugged cool iron. Set your iron in an upright position and look for white residue in the steam holes.

If you notice some, pick an old toothbrush or wood/plastic toothpick to remove build-up. However, do not use anything metal that can cause damage to the soleplate. Turn on your iron and set up the steam feature. Let it heat for at least 5 minutes before you push the steam switch and hold for 20/30 seconds.

Repeat the process at least 6 times. Unplug your iron and let it cool entirely. After, empty out the water tank and make sure that the cleaning mixture is completely gone. Repeat this process every few months to keep your iron clean & working properly. This is considered as a very popular way of unclogging irons.

Cleaning Soleplate

First and foremost, you need to remember that scrubbing your soleplate can cause damage. This is why it is important to clean your soleplate regularly with distilled white vinegar and baking soda or table salt every few months. However, make sure that your iron is unplugged and cold before you start cleaning it.

Cleaning Melted Plastic

If some plastic has melted onto your iron, you need to unplug it before you do anything. Fill a bowl with ice cubes and put the melted-plastic stained piece of your unit on the ice. Let it sit for 10 min to harden the plastic and allow you to scrape away with a blunt knife. After, clean it with the vinegar/salt solution.

In case plastic has transferred onto your garment, leave it in the freezer for 1 hour. After, I recommend using the same technique with a blunt knife in order to gently remove the plastic. However, remember that this technique may not eliminate the plastic completely so you will have to take other precautions.

Tips On How To Use A Rowenta Iron

Every iron has strong and weak sides. However, if you want to make the most out of your Rowenta iron, apply these simple tips in order to protect your ironing unit from damage and get better ironing results.

  • Always use tap water with Rowenta irons because they do not perform very well with distilled.
  • Avoid filling the water reservoir when your ironing unit is plugged in to avoid an electric shock.
  • Turn the item inside out before ironing it to stop “shiny” marks from appearing on darker items.
  • Choose a temperature setting depending on the fabric that you are ironing to prevent soleplate from sticking to the garment. In case you are using starch, spray it on the inside of the garment to avoid contact with the soleplate. Avoid putting the unit facedown on a rough/uneven surface.
  • Use a soft, clean and damp cloth to clean the soleplate instead of something that can scratch it.
  • If you have not used your ironing unit for a while, let it steam for a few minutes before using it.
  • Visit the Rowenta official website to download the specific user manual for your Rowenta iron.

  1. I own a rowenta, a quilter must, as I was told. It leaks and leaks…has ruined a few of my quilts. I no longer use and of course the warranty is expired. Just over a year. Don’t waste your money on a rowenta.

    1. Dear Jackie,

      Thank you for your comment.

I am sorry that you have had a bad experience with your Rowenta.

Unfortunately, almost 99% of the irons leak due to improper use or maintenance.

To stop your Rowenta from leaking you need to take the following steps:

      1. Clean your steam iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
      2. Use your steam iron on a rigid surface like an ironing board.
      3. Allow your steam iron to heat fully in the upright position before ironing.
      4. Turn off the steam function on your iron when ironing at lower temperatures.

If you still experience the same issue, maybe it’s time for a new iron. I would suggest a model with an anti-leaking feature such as the Rowenta DW5197 Steam Iron.

Rowenta DW1150 Steam Iron is also a good option because it has an anti-drip and self-cleaning feature. If you want to try other brands, check out my best steam iron reviews.

      Have a wonderful day.

      Love, Mary.

  2. Please address the ongoing leakage problem. It is a manufacture issue. not human error.
BTW, some models are made in China, according to Rowanta … might want to triple check your facts.

    1. Mary Janes and Galoshes

      Have a nice day.
      Love, Mary.
