How to Use a Heat Transfer Vinyl?
Imprinting is not that hard as you imagine it to be. If you are a professional who has been doing this for a long time, you can skip this part. However, if you are a beginner who wants to learn more about the imprinting process, enjoy the ride. Just follow these simple steps.
Step 1: Gather The Necessary Tools
You need to get the right tools before you get started to simplify the process. And by ‘tools’ we mean: a PC that will assist you in the design preparation, an iron or a heat press machine, and a vinyl cutter or cotton plotter. Next, you should get your artwork ready.
Step 2: Prepare Your Design or Artwork
If you do not have a vector based software on your computer, you should download one. Our suggestion is Silhouette Studio Software. It will take you only a few minutes to install the program. After, you can use it to download designs and images from the online store.
However, if you are doing this for the first time and have no idea how to do it right, ask a friend who is into designing artworks to help you out and create a beautiful custom design.
Step 3: Cutting The Vinyl
When you are finished with the artworks, it is time to flip and cut. You can pick between 2 options. You can either cut with the mat. Or without the mat. Either way, the final results will be excellent. If you are using a mat, make sure that the design fits the mat perfectly.
We are mentioning this because in order to reduce the chances of making a mistake. If the artwork is bigger than the mat, you will need to do some cutting, however, without the mat.
Load the vinyl into the vinyl cutter to make the cut and ensure that the vinyl’s back side is facing up. However, before you actually cut, test the image to make sure that it is perfect.
Step 4: Wedding
When your design is cut, you should weed it next. Meaning, you need to trim the image to take off the extra edges and make sure that it is perfect. Make sure that you have all the unwanted parts removed, so the final design is perfect. The inside of letters like B and O should be weeded very carefully. If you find a weeding tool, it will save you a lot of effort.
Step 5: Transfer
As you would suppose, once you are done fixing all the details, it is time to transfer your final design to your project. Make sure that the design is aligned nicely with the adhesive sticky side facing up. It is very important to space out the weeded design on your project.
Step 6: Applying Pressure and Heat
The final step is applying heat and pressure. You need an iron or a heat press machine for this. However, if you want to get more professional results, we recommend that you use a heat press machine because it allows you to set a precise pressure and temperature level. If you have one of the best heat press machines, you can finish the job in less than 20 s.
Useful Tips on Using a Heat Transfer Vinyl
Right before you go, we would like to share some useful tips on how to use a heat transfer vinyl properly. Whether you are transferring the designs to the crafts or you are cutting, be careful not to endanger yourself. If you have no experience, just follow these few tips.
Follow The Instructions of Your HTV
If you have no experience at all, except for our tips, you can also rely on the instructions that come with your HTV. If it comes with directions on how to use it, you can follow these instructions and you will do just fine. However, if it does not come with directions, you can always search the name of your HTV brand and look for online instruction on how to use it.
Use Dry Heat Because Steam Will Mess Up Your HTV
You should never use steam. It will mess up your HTV. Instead, use dry heat. However, some irons emit steam at systematic intervals. And if there is any water in the tank of the iron, we strongly suggest that you empty it out and leave the iron to dry for a few minutes.
Make Sure That The Iron That You Are Using is not Too Hot
Your design might deform if your iron is too hot from the vinyl shrinking or curling. Check the vinyl’s suggested temperature before you get to work. And keep in mind that different vinyl brands have different heat levels. However, make sure you are NOT using a hot iron.
Make Sure That You Are Using a Teflon Sheet
If you apply the iron directly, it might deform your craft. Therefore, we recommend that you always use a Teflon sheet before applying the iron. If you do not have a Teflon sheet on hand, use an old cloth or a parchment paper instead but NEVER apply the iron directly.
Press Down in One Spot Instead of Ironing
This is one of the most common mistakes beginners make. They act as they are ironing the garment. Instead, you should press down the iron in one spot. It will provide better results than moving the iron around. Press down for a few seconds and move onto another area. In the end, you can iron the whole area for a few seconds. This will lock your design in place.
Never Apply HTV to Hot Pads, Mats or Trivets Made for Surface Protection
You should never apply HTV to hot pads, mats or trivets that are purposed for surface protection against hot dishes. Even though they will not melt the HTV, some that are hot enough might cause it to release an odor that contains different toxins at your table.

Hi I’ve been using a iron on vinyl which I think may be one of the ones listed it weeds well an irons on perfectly, even onto itself but one run through the wash or hand wash and it peels off. I iron out any wrinkles before hand and lint roll any fuzzies or lint that may be on the clothing before I put the vinyl down and it still peels. Is there something I’m missing or doing wrong? Which is a brand you would recommend that will stay though multiple washes?
Mary Janes and Galoshes
Dear Brianna,
Thanks for reaching out.
I would recommend XPCARE Heat Transfer Vinyl for T-Shirts. It’s easy to apply with either a heat press or iron and can withstand multiple washes.
Rozzy Crafts Heat Transfer Vinyl can also be applied with either heat press or iron and doesn’t wrinkle or crack after washing. They’re both excellent choices for beginners.
However, if you’re interested in something more advanced, opt for the PrimeCuts USA Permanent Heat Transfer Vinyl. It’s strong, eco-friendly, and sustains many washes.
Hope this helps!
Have a lovely day and stay safe.
Love, Mary.
