Good morning. I’m hoping you can give me some direction. I have been sewing on and off for many years. More “on” lately, getting into quilting larger and smaller, placemats, and of course masks. I have a Bernina 1130. The feed stopped working and due to COVID I couldn’t get it fixed. Anyway now I can hope it will get fixed but in mean time I bought a Bernina 480 sight unseen and not know if I did right. I have it now 6 months now and I really like it but it seems it is so sensitive. Anyway what is your thoughts on this machine? It didn’t come with many feet, like my old one and I can’t use the older feet, It is BSR ready but it is a very expensive foot! Is it worth getting? Well enough for now.

I currently have a Bernina 330 and am looking to upgrade. I am trying to decide between a 530 and a 630. Both machines are used and are about the same price. I like the color touch screen and the on screen buttonhole measurer on the 630. My concern is that I will be using it for garment sewing and i am not likely to use the embroidery features. My concern is that the 630 will be more difficult learn plus have more exposure to expensive repairs. Also, I think the 630 is an older model. You you think my concerns about the 630 are valid? Hopefully you can help me. I have several questions. I have quilted for over 20 years and I was in the middle of another quilt when my Bernina Record 930 electronic has quit. I have been sewing on this machine since I got it in 1983. It has been a very reliable machine and has had regular maintenance over the years. I’m not sure I want to take it to a repair shop or maybe it is time to look for another good machine. I would like one with more space between the needle and the motor. What ever I get hopefully will out last me. At 79 you never know. What would you suggest?

Bernina 435, on the other hand, has a 4.3-inch display that utilizes touch technology. Therefore, it’s very easy to utilize. The intuitive display makes navigation and other settings so much easier.
It’s suitable for professionals and intermediate sewers. What I like about this model is the jumbo bobbin because it holds 70% more thread than a regular bobbin. Bernina 535 has the same bobbin.
The number of stitches is also impressive. You can choose from 150 stitches and 3 fonts. The threader is semi-automatic. Bernina 535 has 300 stitches and 5 alphabets.
As you said yourself, there’s not a big difference between these models except for the price and number of stitches. Therefore, purchase the less expensive one.

Hello I have the same dilemma in choosing!
The 435 do not have the cutting of thread option and the throat is narrow, 17 cm.
That is why I am looking at the Bernette 77 , but do not know if the quality etc will be as good as a Bernina.
I get nothing on the internet where they compare Bernette models with Bernina models

Hello. I have the opportunity to purchase a Bernina Artista 630 for $600. Is this a reasonable price? What types of characteristics should I be aware of or check for when I test out this machine? It does not have the embroidery capability nor am I interested in that . It does look to include all the other standard accessories that were sold with it including the BSR.

Yes! You can purchase a new Bernina Artista 630E sewing, quilting and embroidery machine for less than $3000. Therefore, getting this workhorse for $600 is a pretty good deal.
It’s one of Bernina’s most popular machine with first-class quilting function. It has 5mm wide decorative stitches, a stitch regulator, 213 decorative stitches, and 23 quilting stitches.
You will also get 5 lettering fonts and a top speed of 680 stitches per minute. It’s a versatile and durable machine. However, there’s a learning curve for beginners. Also, it’s expensive.
If you can get your hands on this machine for less than $1000, that’s a good deal. However, keep in mind that this sewing machine is expensive to fix. Other than that, it’s perfect.

I am researching buying my first Bernina and I really would love to get a “special edition” if I can find one. The current “special” ones are the Tula Pink – which I adore, but I am not sure I can afford, because they are in the 5 & 7 line.
The 350 looked beautiful to me when I first started looking at more “affordable Bernina’s” and thought it could be the machine for me to start with, but things got complicated when I started looking at machines that had embroidery functions.
General Question – do Bernina machines with “embroidery” need special software to download patterns from an Embroidery Library? Someone advised me to be careful with buying any Bernina, because your locked into certain downloads, and if you want to able to access libraries that people who have Brother and Baby Lock use, you will need to purchase special software that is pretty expensive, just to enable the Bernina to accept the patterns.
I want t to have a machine that has the strength to sew thicker fabrics like canvas, waxed canvas, denim, maybe even leather!! Definitely fleece and cuddle fabrics but can handle delicate fabrics and linen.
I enjoy making garments, curtains, pillows, totes, wallets, and handbags. I also make quits.
On my “wish list”, besides basics like power and dependability and has room to let me grow. I would love automatic threader, thread cutting, and a screen that is easy to read. (the 350 has a small LCD screen – that does not impress me). I absolutely love that the 475 and 535 have those dials that allow a visual of what the thread will look like when you adjust the width and length.
Other models I am considering are the: B475, 535 and the 530 (that has the same small screen as the 350).
Would love your thoughts.

The Tula Pink would respond to your sewing needs perfectly. In my opinion, the other models you mentioned, aren’t as versatile and powerful as Tula Pink.
In this time, it’s hard to find a good deal on sewing machines because most of the sewing units aren’t available so if you find one, don’t hesitate to take it.

I’m so glad I found your site and can read all your reviews and advice. I’m in the market for a new machine and I have my heart set on a Bernina. I have a couple of issues, thought. I have sew off and on for about 20 years with starter machines from Singer. I about 4 years ago, I got Baby Lock Rachel as an annivsary gift and while I was thrilled beyond belief. It became evident to me, rather quickly that I need a stronger machine. Even working with relatively simple materials gives my machine issues. Minky /Cuddle or fleece fabric almost killed it. While it’s a great “beginner” – it’s certainly not for me anymore. Problem is, I don’t want another Baby Lock – I really want a Bernina (even thought I have never even seen one in person or worked on one) my research has lead to believe they are truly are the Tesla of the Sewing Machine world.
My neighbor, is an avid sewing and does a lot a embroidery work. She is a fan of Brother and Baby Lock (I know they are the same company) she has really tried to steer me away from Bernina. Especially if I ever grow to love embroidery. I respect her wisdom in regards to embroidery (as I know little to nothing about it – nor am I particularly interested at this moment in embroidery). She mostly cautioned me, because my true desire is to get a Tula Pink special edition and they is big time geared towards embroidery. My neighbor is not sure if Bernita has changed any of the ways that people can download additional embroidery packages – Its a proprietary issue she was concerned about, has a friend who has a Bernina and needed to buy all kinds of special softwear to just use a Web based embroidery library.
Fact is – I really cant swing a Tula Pink model at this time.
I really need, more power and more speed.
I want to sew garments – knits, linen, cotton and delicate fabrics.
I want to make bags and work with canvas and waxed canvas, denim and thicker materials.
I want to make quilts and sew on the bindings – use cuddle and fleece fabrics and not worry about it killing my investment.
I’m looking several different models and with the Covid crisis going on; I’m trying to narrow things down and much as possible, before driving to a shop to test drive one.
The 350 seems to be a work horse that will work for all my needs, but that tiny LED screen is not a great fit for me.
The 480 seems to have some beautiful bells and whistles – but it’s that same LED screen again.
The 475 looks like beautiful – it appears to have that “real time” look at the stich as I adjust the width and length of my stich choices – and I love that. I would love to have a machine that has a thread cutter, as this does.
The 535 – my first intuition was shot down, after I kept reading that people have had trouble with the thread causing nesting (which is a huge annoyance I deal with my Baby Lock, so those reviews scared me off from the 535).
I really need to spend less than $3,000.
My husband would really give me he blessing (I hope) if I keep it closer to $2,000 (and even better if I can work out a better deal or a find a “sale” or closeout).
I would really love your advice, not as a sales person, but as someone who really knows and loves Bernina.
Brothers and Baby Locks – while I do know they have lovey and decent machines – they don’t inspire me at all.

I’m considering replacing my 30+ year old singer 5528 which has served me well, I inherited it from my mom when she passed. It has a manual buttonhole. I have had it serviced once for tension issues. I replaced the belt myself. It works fine except for a clicking sound in the hand wheel and some tension problems which I did figure out. I have made many many masks. Price is a concern. I am looking at Bernette 38 or the 77, I think I may want to quilt and think the larger throat area would be great. I am struggling if the 77 would be worth almost twice the price. I would love a bernina, but price is a concern if the bernette would work as well.

Bernette 77 is an affordable sewing machine with a bunch of extras. Bernette 38 is also affordable with a wide range of features. However, Bernette 77 is more advanced.
If you’re looking for something budget-friendly but still feature-rich, opt for Betnette 38 and don’t worry about the quality because Bernina is the parent company for Bernette.
They provide the same quality machines but for budget sewers.

I have been sewing for around 20 years. I bought a Pfaff quilt ambition 2.0 and having it just over a year I’m not very fond of it. I’ve had a machine engineer in twice and recently had it sent off twice to the people I bought it from. I’ve been informed that I must use a decent cotton and use decent SCHMETZ. Needles Tree all me threads out and replaced with moon thread otherwise the machine won’t stitch properly it seems crazy never known this before. I was thinking of selling it and buying a Bernina possibly B480 or B435. Price is a big consideration but I’ve seen someone say there are problems with the bobbins. Could I have your opinion please

If you have the money and want a new toy, I support your decision of selling your old Pfaff and buying a brand new sewing machine. The brand you chose is trusted and has a good reputation.
And the machines you mentioned are both great. According to my research, no one has reported bobbin issues with these units. Usually, bobbin issues occur due to wrong threading and winding.
Therefore, you can buy one of them without worrying about bobbin issues.
The Bernina 480 is powerful. And it’s easy to use. It’s perfect for both small and large projects thanks to the adjustable presser foot pressure and jumbo bobbin for fewer interruptions.
The Bernina 435 is perfect for sewists and crafters. It also has a Jumbo bobbin and advanced features. If you want a modern machine with lots of stitches and letters, 435 is ideal for you.

I’m currently using the Bernina 1080 model, over 26 years of great service. I’m afraid the circuit board is on it’s last legs as advised at the last service. I’m quite distressed about that.
I’m looking to get a new machine but hope to get something that will be compatible with the 1080 walking foot and patchwork foot.
What do you advise?

Many of the sewing machines aren’t available for purchase at the moment because of the crisis. If you’re not in a hurry, I would recommend that you wait for a while.
However, if you’re in a hurry, there’s only one unit by Bernina available at the moment. It’s the Bernette 38 Swiss Design Computerized Sewing Machine. It’s a good machine.

I have a Bernina Artista 170 which was given to me. In using the letters, I want to put my grandchildren’s names on an article, but I can’t figure out how to make the machine stop after sewing one name, it just continues on with the same name until I stop it. What do I need to do in order to make the machine stop after making just one name? I know it must be something simple, but I can’t figure it out. Help!

There is no such model as Activa 40. I’m sure that you’ve mixed it with Bernina 240 sewing machine.
In that case, it’s a solid sewing machine made with passionate sewers in mind. It’s built with high-quality materials and comes with a lot of interesting features.
They include a freehand system, 30 memory positions, 3 sewing alphabets with 155 different characters and 7 presser feet as standard. It also includes 99 stitches and 5 buttonholes.
These features make sewing even easier.

I would like to know if I can get the extension cord and also the embroidery hoop. It is the gold Anniversary sewing machine. I have found were I work at. My machine was the singer which is now broke. Would cost more to fix it. All of the parts are plastic. I do make my clothes, mean clothes, and quilt also I have been wanting the embroidery machine also ..Been sewing since I was about 10 years old don’t mine telling you come April I will be 60. Sewing is what I love to do.

My Bernina was bought in 1993 for a lot of money. I had it regularly checked. I cleaned it myself in between servicing to remove dust and tiny threads,
It broke, just stopped while using it. I could not be restarted, with no hints it was in trouble. I took it to my trusted repair person in Southern California. . He said he thought it was a power board, it was “electronic” but not quite computerized. Who cares, it did what I wanted. But, he said there are no more power boards for this computer. Bernina has no more. To get one it would have to be individually made and with no guarantees it would work. No other aftermarket source. i lookedmachines at a quilt show, went to other local dealers and got the same information – no fixing. Compounding my problem: no new Bernina machines were compatible with my accessories ($$$ for Bernina accessories)
So, needing another, I talked to friends, women in my quilt guild, etc. I know women with non-fancy machines, straight stitch only, but I need what my 1260 had. No big embroidery, just a few decorative stitches and good Buttonhole capability, good stitch, good walking foot. But NOW In addition to that, I want a bigger throat for large pieces, and perhaps some home quilting. I also want a bigger “table” than the old one had.
A Friend likes her Janome, but that model is no longer available. Another likes her straight stitching only — which does have a big throat – but strictly straight stitcher.
Any suggestions?
