While making myself some feather hair accessories I found it difficult to 1. find a variety of (appealing) colors locally and 2. not spend a fortune online for what I was looking for. I finally found a solution when I ordered "feather trim" by the yard in white. Since it's supposed to be trim it's less expensive as they assume you will need a larger bulk, and since it's white.... I can dye it any color! I decided to start with yellow, because I had a big feather flower I was dieing (funny girl, dieing, dying, get it... moving on) to see in yellow.
It's not rocket science, but you may not have realized it can be done. I used yellow Rit dye, the powder (because it's cheap). Sprinkled a bit in hot water and mix. Here you can see my bundle of feathers, trim comes on a ribbon, just cut into sections. The ribbon really makes it a lot easier to dye also!
Let them soak, push them around, pull them out of the bath and spread them apart to make sure everyone is getting covered. Once they look like the color you want, lay on a paper towel to dry.
You can allow them to dry on their own, or if your impatient like me, a warm blow dryer works great!
Cut the feathers at the base from the ribbon and use them any way you like! Enjoy.

Oooo! Love this! I've always bought my daughters hair accessories but I'm def. thinking I need to start making them. Starting with this one! So cute and spunky!

way cool idea! I've got a friend who just opened up a hair accessory business...I'll be passing on this link!
ReplyDeleteTaylor,
ReplyDeleteYour pictures are really wonderful!!
I have to smile as I see you going into the "yellow phase". I went through this in my late 20's as well! I wanted a yellow VW bug in the worst way! Yellow was MY color!
Enjoy the summery yellow phase of your life!
Love, Mom
PS, I think you should post about your next dying craft in MY antique laundry room sink!!
LOL, yellow does remind me of you. It was your favorite color for a LONG TIME! I hated yellow and now I love it!
ReplyDeleteYou can dye feathers using Kool-Aid and white vinegar too!
ReplyDeleteREALLY?! Oh I am so trying that!!!!! How much vinegar, like 2 tbs?
ReplyDeleteKool-Aid works just like an acid dye, which works for any protein based material. Wash the feathers in a bowl of soapy water first. While they're soaking, fill a second bowl with water and maybe 1/4 cup of vinegar (we're not very precise). Transfer feathers to the second bowl and let sit for 5 min. In a third bowl combine two packets of Kool-Aid and a few drops of vinegar. Put feathers in and microwave for 2 minutes, then cool for a few minutes, then repeat. If you want them darker, do it again with another pack of Kool-Aid. Rinse until water runs clear and dry! My husband has been doing a lot of it lately and has some pictures. If you want to email me, I'll send them to you.
ReplyDeleteOh my...my husband is going to hate that I am now going to buy feathers...
ReplyDeleteOhh, I love this! I've been wanting to use feathers in a project I've been thinking about and didn't even think about the possibility of dying them. Where did you get the feather trim?
ReplyDeleteErin- You need to read yesterday's post, your a no-reply blogger!!! Not sure if you will see this, but I got my feather trim off etsy. Just search and can find one near you.
ReplyDeleteLove the yellow! It makes me smile;) I might just use this tip when I do crafts for summer camp this year.
ReplyDeletethis is rocket science, I had no idea you could dye feathers, I have wanted some barely pink ones forever...Now I can have them!! Thank you!
