Feather Dying

While making myself some feather hair accessories I found it difficult to 1. find a variety of (appealing) colors locally and 2. not spend a fortune online for what I was looking for.  I finally found a solution when I ordered "feather trim" by the yard in white.  Since it's supposed to be trim it's less expensive as they assume you will need a larger bulk, and since it's white.... I can dye it any color!  I decided to start with yellow, because I had a big feather flower I was dieing (funny girl, dieing, dying, get it... moving on) to see in yellow.

It's not rocket science, but you may not have realized it can be done.  I used yellow Rit dye, the powder (because it's cheap).  Sprinkled a bit in hot water and mix.  Here you can see my bundle of feathers, trim comes on a ribbon, just cut into sections. The ribbon really makes it a lot easier to dye also!

Let them soak, push them around, pull them out of the bath and spread them apart to make sure everyone is getting covered.  Once they look like the color you want, lay on a paper towel to dry.

You can allow them to dry on their own, or if your impatient like me, a warm blow dryer works great!

Cut the feathers at the base from the ribbon and use them any way you like!  Enjoy.
