Ruffle Fabric Hat Tutorial

Very flapper girl don't you think? I used the always amazing Ruffle Fabric to create these hats and it's so much quicker and easier than you might think! You are only going to sew one line!!!!  This project takes advantage of the fabric and took me only ten minutes to make a hat for both myself and my daughter (well minus the flower time). 

What you need-
Ruffle Fabric, half a yard was plenty to create two hats, make sure you get the smaller ruffle not the 2 inch
Sewing machine (you can do this by hand, there is only one seem so it actually wouldn't take all that long)
Flower (See this tutorial on how I make my flowers- petals, poppies, or  peonies)
Measuring tape

Before you get started you will need to write down some measurements.

Measure the circumference of the head.  Write that number down and subtract 5.  Now divide by 2.

Example- Head measures 21 inches around 21-5=16 /2=8

Now measure from the eye brow to the top of the head vertically.  Write that number down.  You will also need to subtract 1.5 inches for a separate measurement. 

Example- Eyebrow to top of head 7 inches  I need that measurement and 7-1.5=5.5 inches

Now we are ready for fabric.  Fold your fabric right sides together making sure the ruffles are laying nice and flat in the same direction (toward the bottom of the hat).   With your first measurement from the circumference, measure from the fold out and pin ( 8 inches from example).

Halfway between the fold and your pin measure up your eyebrow measurement (7 inches from example, white star in photo below)

From your bottom pin and from the bottom of fold up (black stars in photo below) measure up your -1.5 measurement (5.5  in example).

Angle your black star pins toward the top white star pin to create a dome shape.  Allowing ourself a seam allowance, cut around the outside of your pins in an upside down U shape.  NOTE- we are using the fold as part of our construction, do not cut through the fold any further than where the pin is.

Along the side you just cut, pull the ruffle ends out so that you catch them in the sewing machine.

Sew along the entire edge you just cut.  Trim your extra fabric and turn right side out.  Attach your flower on preferred side and your done!

The formulas for measurements are the same in adult and child sizes.
