I mentioned to you guys last week that my mom and I (and all three of my kids) were headed to my grandmothers house for a couple days while she's on vacation to re-do her sewing room (something she has been talking about doing herself for a long time now!). We took Tuesday night, all day Wednesday, then Thursday morning to finish. We had a budget we had to stay within so we couldn't do quite as much as we wanted, but it was still a major improvement!
Here is the Before!
She had most of her fabric stored in her bedroom closet, not even in this room! The cabinet is a sewing table that folds out when open, so when you notice there is no sewing space, it's all inside that cabinet. But we thought the cabinet could use a face lift. Grandma had been looking for something to fill that big empty wall above the couch for ever! The lamp was really wiggly and the head literally fell off! Are you ready to see what we did with it?
The After!
Using sticky dots I cut nice, quality wrapping paper to the size of the cabinet insert to dress it up. We didn't want to do anything to permanent since this is a surprise, but you could use mod podge to make this more durable. The bookshelf is new from Target and took me 2.5 hours to put together! It was fun, but I had to back track twice for mistakes. Galoshes doesn't read directions so I had to take that one on myself (although she did carry all the pieces to me when I needed them!).
We used a plastic place mat to add a pop of color to the desk.
Pictures pulled from closet, large pic on top is new. We fell in love with it, it's a real photo on canvas of a bunch of 1920s women in swim suits lined up. Grandma is a big swimmer so we also pulled some photos of her in suits throughout the years and added some camping photos that kind of fit the theme. The gumball machine is thrifted, as well as the shelf. Frames mostly from the dollar store.
Almost all of what you see above is thrifted. The bottom shelf is from the hardware store and frames from dollar store. Large button jar from Target.
Glass for bells I pulled out of her china cabinet.
Photos of grandma with her friends growing up to go along with the vintage women canvas.
We're sure she forgot she even had personalized woven tags!
Another doll from mom, although this one has been on display since I was a kid. I loved her so much I even wore my hair like that for second grade school pictures! She was not for playing with though!
I hope you enjoyed seeing what we did with the place. Can't wait for grandma to get home and check it out. It's a complete surprise and early christmas gift so we wrapped the door!

Wow! What a great job! I can't wait to hear what she thought! I love the photo from Gordmans. What a great find. The wrapping paper on the cabinet makes a huge difference. Love!
I have a gum ball sitting in my garage that I forgot about until your post. I'm going to get it out and use it! Thanks for all the great ideas!
This is great! It makes me wonder what is lost in the abyss that is my craft room? Maybe I should work on that:)
What a fabulous surprise for her! It looks great and so much more functional!
I have that second doll you showed- Kirsten, American Girl doll. :)
MaryJanes didn't mention that we sorted buttons, from pins, from pom balls and every thing got it's own spot, jar or box. And we had updated her notion of aprons by giving her a print out and apron pattern from 2010, neither of which had been used yet, so we put them front and center on the inspiration boards inside the cabinet. I think we pulled 30 straight pins from the carpet...naughty grandma!! She also left out that we were up till 2am the first night and 12:15 the second so that we had time to work on it while the three little ones slept. It was fun, and MaryJanes had some very good ideas that I wouldn't have thought of!

I saw a gumball machine at a flea market this weekend and now am kicking myself for not buying it!!
Wowza!! I hope ya'll were ready in case she passed out. I gotta tell ya if someone loved me enough to do that for me...Wow!!
Ya'll did an amazing job and now she'll be able to work on christmas gifts in an awesome new environment that was only in her dreams before ya'll put so much labor in.
Taylor, this is the sweetest thing ever. I smiled during the entire post! <3
The room looks fantastic and so much more inviting than before! What a nice surprise for her. Felt like I was watching one of those make-over shows. Let's see, I have a cluttered office that needs a fix-up, and then there's my craft room, oh and did I mention a storage room....
I want that room! And how sweet is the gift wrapped door!
Beautiful! What a great surprise!
You guys are awesome! You really have a flair for decorating.
wow, not sure if that is a spice rack or not but I'm going to be on the hunt for old spice racks now as a way to display my bobbins!!! Love the new look!!!!
