Braided Headband Tutorial

It's chilly outside here today and I'm loving it! I enjoyed every minute of reaching into the closet and pulling out soft cozy blankets, snuggling up on the couch with my blanket and laptop to check my e-mail this morning... Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of temps below 40 degrees, but a high of 65, I'll take it!

Anyway.... on with the tutorial.  Here is what we are making today!
What you need-
Thick hair tie
Six 1" strips of fabric
Bulldog clip or safety pin
Sewing machine (or needle and thread)
Fabric tac

I ripped my fabric strips so they were a bit frayed on the edges, personal choice.  Clip three strips together and braid. Did I mention this is going to be really easy! Your braids should be about 6 inches short of going around your head.

Tack each end of the braid just enough that it doesn't come undone .
Then tack both braids together on each end, be careful not to twist the braids.
Cut your hair tie so it's one strip of elastic.
Sandwich your elastic ends between the ends of your braids on each end, again, careful not to twist the braids.
Sew over the elastic so that it's secure.  With a scrap of your fabric, wrap the ends of the braids for a finished look.  I used fabric tac for this.
Your done!
Enjoy!

Thank you so much... I had a little trouble with the finishing part. I'm from Chile, so i must translate everything and i don't really know what fabric tac is. Made 2 (in one night) the first i tried machine sweing the finishing toches and broke 2 needles, for the 2cond one i used a hot glue gun and came out a little better. any advice for the 3rd????
    Muchas gracias,
    desde chile, TRINIDAD

    Maria-
I'm so glad you like the project, I'm sorry you have to translate everything. I follow a couple blogs I can't read at all because of the language! Fabric Tac is a fabric glue. It's thick and sticky. Sort of like hot glue but it's not as stiff. Any fabric glue should do the trick. I do prefer the stickier thicker ones. Good Luck!

This is a really a cute idea- and much better than having to pay $20 at urban outfitters for precisely the same thing! Seriously! So much nicer to make it oneself, and I'm definitely going to give this project a go.

When I tried to sew the two braids together with the elastic the fabric was to thick and my needle broke. Do you think that hot glue would work instead?

I couldn't get the fabric glue to hold so I tied a knot in all three pieces a few inches in. Then I braided it and tied another knot a few inches from the end. Then I sewed a small piece of elastic on the inside of the flat fabric on either end and just folded it around the elastic and it came out great!
    Thanks for the wonderful ideas!

This is a great project! We do a lot of recycled t-shirt workshops here in New Orleans, and I think this would be a great project to add to our roster with our t-shirt scraps!

    Hello
In first thank you very much for your tutorial.
I'm French and I have a little translation problem, maybe you can help me. Yu speak in "inches" in France we use centimeters. 6 inches = 15 cm. Only, 15 cm it is small and it does not as long as braids on your photos. Have you given the measurements for a band to child or I have a conversion problem?

  27. MaryJanes and Galoshes said... May 07, 2011

    Marion,
I notice I do have a typo there, but it's not the six inches. It should say six inches "short" not sort. So your braid will be the measurement of your head minus 6 inches (or 15 cm).

Just made one of these ad I love it! Thanks for the awesome idea. I'm going to try and do bracelets like this now as well by tying the ends and ditching the elastic.

Love the idea, hate the way your camera is in the photos.
Next time, turn the camera around & look via the reflection in the mirror. You can use your screen to see what you are doing via reflection & ta-da no camera in shot :)
