T-Shirt Tuxedo Dress

We've all been seeing adorable onesies transformed into dresses, so here's my version.

A jersey knit tuxedo dress comfy enough for playtime. Much quicker and simpler than it looks, I promise.

What you need-
Stained onesie
Small t-shirt (I used a youth size M, so I say small but it's not that specific)
Length of lace- mine was to wide so I simply used a scissors to trim it down in a scallop like manner.
2 buttons
Coordinating piece of felt or fleece

Cut the bottom of the onesie off about two inches below the armpits.  Measure how long you want your bib to be, take a square of your felt or fleece, fold it in half and cut a J shape (like you did in kindergarten to cut a heart out).Now you have a U shape for the base of your bib design.

Lay out your t-shirt and cut the bottom off at the length you want for your skirt, then cut another strip off one to two inches wide.  This strip will be a big circle, cut it so that it's one long strip.  You will use this to create your ruffle.

Set your sewing machine to the longest stitch length.  Because I don't like to mess with my machine settings any more than I have to I choose to pinch my top thread as I'm sewing to create the ruffle rather than increase the tension setting, that's up to you, the pinching method works great.   Sew one long stitch down the middle of the strip, do NOT back stitch, you will be removing this thread.

 

Set aside

Lay your felt piece on top of your onesie so that the two tops of the U are at the edge of the neck and pin.

Turn it inside out and cut the exposed felt flush to the neckline.  Turn it right side out again. The neckline you just cut will match the bottom of the seam on the neckline of the onesie.  Sew in place.

 

Grab the ruffle you made and your lace.  Pin around the edge of your bib.


Using the stitch in your ruffle as a guide, sew a permanent stitch on each side of the temporary stitch.  Remove temporary stitch.

Now to add the skirt.  I did not pin the skirt due to the method I used to ruffle this part.  With right sides together, stretch the onesie out as far as it goes without pulling to hard, DO NOT stretch the skirt fabric!

Sew all the way around, continuing to stretch the onesie as you go. When your done the onsie shrinks back up creating the flow of the skirt.

 

Almost done!

Choose some fun buttons and hand sew to the bib area.
