I thought I knew how to tie a bow, but it always flipped around on me. Turns out I've been doing step 4 wrong my whole life! Found this great tutorial.How-to Tie the Perfect Bow | |

| 1. Measure ribbon by wrapping the ribbon around the box twice. It is helpful to use a sharp pair of scissors when trimming your edges. Make sure to leave enough ribbon so you can trim the edges again, if necessary, after your bow is tied. | 2. Hold ribbon taut around the box and with your right hand pull the length of ribbon on the left over and under to create a single tie, as you would when tying your shoe. |

| 3. Place your thumb on your left hand to hold the tension and pull the ribbon length of the right side up to create a loop. | 4. Pull the loop over to the right as you use your left hand to take the ribbon length around the loop. |

| 5. Pull ribbon through and under. Then pull up to create a second loop over the first loop. | 6. Pull the two loop ends to create a even bow. |

| 7. Tighten the bow to your desired length. | 8. To create even edges, take both ribbon lengths on left and right, pull together to measure them at the same place which ensures they will be cut at the same length, and then cut at any angle you please. |

| 9. Perfect! Now finish off with a decorative gift tag and note to make your gift special and unique! | |

Add CommentI needed this. Thank you. It's my daughters birthday this week and my bows are always lacking.
ha ha funny you posted this..my daughter wanted me to tie her dress and i suck at tying bows! they are always lopsided! too bad i didn't read this b4 she left for school!!!
Wow ...yeah I've always wondered the secret ...and now I must practice!!!
I love this...except I am left handed and it is all backwards for me! I will have to practice more. Your site is lots of fun--I linked here from Ruffles and Stuff. I'll be back. Thanks!
I am the WORST bow tier in the world!
Thank you! Every time I tie my the bow on my daughter's dresses, I ask Daddy to redo them; now I may not have to!
Nice tutorial. Something I like to do if I have enough ribbon length is to repeat steps 3 to 6 and create a second bow, so you have four loops instead of just two.
And for trimming the end, it's pretty to fold the ribbon in half lengthwise and cut on an angle to create a notched "v" at the end.
